Spring practice started today for the middle school and freshmen and varsity starts next week. I am the interim HC (HC left for another job last week) and have been asked to run spring practice until a new coach is hired. Since we do not know who the next HC will be, I have planned on spending the 2 weeks on fundamentals, instead of working our offense and defense since one or both may change with the HC hire. Lord knows we can use all the drill time we can get.

My major question is I only have one varsity assistant helping me and two middle school coaches who are inexperienced. What is the best way to plan practices for two coaches, with both getting assistance from the middle school coaches? The middle school didn't run the same schemes as we did on varsity, so I want to make sure those kids are getting coached up as our varsity kids would be (same terminology, drills, etc.) and I don't feel they are ready to turn loose at the moment.

I would meet with all the coaches and go through the fundamentals you will teach. Identify, by position, what each player should know how to do. Determine the standard of performance for each. Decide who among you can best teach what. Make up a draft schedule that breaks out the fundamentals by either position or skill. Example: OL, TEs & WRs, RBs and QBs. Figure how much time you need for each. Make your periods short but quick. Include a couple of fun things every now and then.

Coaches,

I am looking at taking an assistant or GA spot next year (hopefully) down in Texas or Louisianna.... I have been coaching in the upper Mid West for the last five years. I've talked with a lot of coaches down below the "Mason-Dixon Line" and can tell that there is something "different" in the football waters down there, but was looking if any of you guys would have a first-hand experience of what to expect.

I coached in Florida for a long, long time and would like to count the players who have went on to the NFL from their states verses Florida. I got 8 kids in the NFL today who are players, not just on the rosters
who grew up within a mile of each other! Rod Gardner, Laverneus Coles, Brian Dawkins, Ralph Dawkins, Lito Sheperd, Westbrook, Jabbar Gaffney and Patrick Sapp. Not to mention Leonard Larramore, James Coley, Scott Player from my pro team. ALL BUT 2 OF THE MENTIONED ARE FROM THE SAME SCHOOL. THAT SAME SCHOOL BOASTS OF HAVING HAD HAROLD CARMICHEL, KENNY BURROUGHS, GREG COLEMAN, VINCE COLEMAN (BASEBALL GREAT) TRUCK ROBINSON (NBA GREAT). BOB HAYES PLAYED FOR OUR ARCH RIVAL IN THE SAME TOWN. ANTOINE BOLDEN FROM FLA STATE AND NOW IN THE NFL WENT TO THE SAME SCHOOL BOB DID. Thats just some who come to mind quickly. I don't think Texas has a thing on Florida at any level of competition. Just my opinion.

actually, jc, louisiana has the most nfl players per capita than any other state. pennsylvania has the most in the hall of fame. and, please, see my post under the topic "Clash of the Titans...OHIO vs TEXAS" about my take on which state is the "best" football state.

But Tiger, you also have an argument with ratio of players in a single city demographic. 3 of the top 6 HS who have bred the most NFL players come from Florida HS's

Sports Illustrated had it in in issue this past year. It broke down all the major pro sports by state.

well, unfortunatley that site is not 100 % correct on who is from where. Just looking at the Oregon Washington and California sections I could come up with at least 12 names that should be on there that arent and they are from one of those 3 states.

Great reply coach, I was about to do the same after seeing several people I know who are not listed! But looking at it at face value and not measuring error, I would bet if it was 100% accurate and valid, results would be somewhat similar or should I say that a #1 would not drop to a #4 and a # 5 would not move up to #1? The big three would be a trifecta? Would you agree? I do believe the stats were taken from 2001 and has not been updated since. Here is the more updated link:

2) Mississippi (1 for every 60,478)
3) S. Carolina (1 for every 79,208)
4) Florida (1 for every 100,561)
5) Georgia (1 for every 102,667)
6) Alabama (1 for every 107,861)

What is in the water in that particular region? Send some of that up North- HA HA

NY stats are 1 NFL player for every 565,502 people
PA is 1 for every 206,771
Ohio is 1 for every 156, 972
CA is 1 player for every 179,468
TX is 1 for every 129,253

It would be interesting to find out the ratio of D1A players and their represented home states

overall numbers of d1 athletes (not per capita...just overall signees) has texas #1....followed california & florida. these are top 3 (in same order) every year for last 10 years.

now, i am by no means saying these 3 states play the "best" football. main reason they lead the country in d1 players is because they are among the more heavily populated states and have a high number of players participating in football. i, for one, don't see how we can ever say that one state is better at football than others. true, some states have a greater advantage: large numbers, athletic periods, large number of colleges which allow for access by coaches/players for clinics & camps, facilities (due to lots of things: community wants, weather/climate, budgets etc.).
