In watching russ grimm's tape on power/counter, i noticed that he has his OT step upfield with the inside foot first (foot closest to the OG and away from the double with the TE), then into the defender with his outside foot (closest foot to the double with the TE) on the second step. He feels this "times" up the block better so the OT can deliver the blow off the closest foot to the TE on the second step. I think he also feels this lets the OT release onto a run-through LB more quickly if necessary.
Generally, i've seen most coaches teach the OT to step with the foot closest to the TE first to prevent a 5 or 7 technique from splitting the double and was wondering which way you guys that run a lot of power/counter teach it and why.
This is how Joe Bugel, Jim Hanifan, & Russ Grimm ALL taught it with the Redskins:
TECHNIQUES ON COUNTER
A) ALL DOUBLE TEAMS ON PLAYSIDE (TE & ON T; ON T & ON G)
OUTSIDE BLOCKER = TAKE A FLAT LATERAL GAP STEP WITH YOUR INSIDE FOOT, KEEPING THE SHOULDERS SQUARE. AIM FOR NEAR HIP OF DLM WITH YOUR HEAD ON HIS DOWNFIELD SIDE. THINK OF BLOCKING THE DLM AND IF HE STAYS HEAD UP OR OUTSIDE SHOULDER OF YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE, HE IS YOUR MAN — PERIOD! IF THE DLM DISAPPEARS INSIDE ACROSS THE FACE OF YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE, GO TO THE SECOND LEVEL AND "BUILD THE WALL" TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE. IF YOU GET A SHOT AT THE PLAYSIDE Lber — TAKE IT, BUT DON'T VARY OFF COURSE TO CHASE THE PLAYSIDE Lber, BECAUSE THE BACKSIDE Lber IS THE MAN THAT KILLS THE PLAY (IF YOU HIT THE PLAYSIDE Lber AND START LOSING HIM — LET HIM GO, AND CONTINUE TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE). THIS IS A VERY "DISCIPLINED TECHNIQUE". YOU AND YOUR INSIDE TEAMMATE ARE WORKING TOGETHER — BOTH YOU ARE BLOCKING GAP — UPSTREAM (FROM THE DLM TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE).
INSIDE BLOCKER = TAKE A FLAT LATERAL GAP STEP WITH YOUR INSIDE FOOT, KEEPING THE SHOULDERS SQUARE, AND STRIKE THE INSIDE BREASTPLATE OF THE DLM WITH YOUR OUTSIDE HAND — SPLITTING HIS CROTCH WITH YOUR SECOND STEP WITH YOUR OUTSIDE FOOT ("GET A LITTLE BITE" TO HELP YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE — TRY TO STAND DLM UP). YOUR EYES MUST GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE INSIDE AS YOU WORK UPFIELD TO "BUILD THE WALL" TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE (BE ALERT FOR PLAYSIDE Lber RUNNING THRU THE INSIDE GAP AS YOU GO FOR FIRST Lber OFFSIDE). IF THE DLM COMES INSIDE, YOU MUST LOCK ONTO HIM, AND YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE WILL "BUILD THE WALL" AT THE SECOND LEVEL. YOU AND YOUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE ARE WORKING TOGETHER — BOTH OF YOU ARE BLOCKING GAP — UPSTREAM (FROM THE DLM TO THE FIRST Lber OFFSIDE).
NOTE: IF "GAP" CALL MADE PLAYSIDE — EVERYONE BLOCKING A DLM ALONE MUST GET A "BIGGER BITE" ON THE DLM (YOU MAY NEED TO DRIVE YOUR HELMET ACROSS IN FRONT OF HIM AND USE THE FAR SHOULDER IF HE IS A "PENETRATOR").
PS: If you pull up the FCPGA VIDEO LIBRARY online - you can get Hanifan's video on the COUNTER/POWER SERIES, which has more detail on the footwork, steps, etc than does the great tapes by Joe Bugel & Russ Grimm. It is in Vol. 6 - JIM HANIFAN · WASHINGTON REDSKINS: WASHINGTON COUNTER GAP & POWER RUN PLAY VS. ODD, EVEN, REDUCED FRONTS
Thanks bill, got those vids, have watched them a bunch and like the technique. I was just curious if this footwork on the double is specific to the power/counter play to protect against a 5 tech jumping across the OT's face into to the B gap (in which case the TE goes right now to the MLB). When i played, i was always taught that the o-linemen on a double team stepped together (ie got their butt's together on the first step to prevent penetration) and was wondering how the o-line guys on here teach it.
Essentially, i guess the question boils down to whether preventing C gap penetration by having the OT step laterally towards the TE on his first step or preventing an across the face B gap stunt by having the OT step upfield/laterally with the inside foot (away from TE) was more important at the HS level ??
When the OT G & ON T double (when Center = uncovered) the ON G must take that gap step to watch for MLB run thru in the A Gap (also if man on ON G is a reader - he will close down setting him up for the ON T's block). Same if ON T & TE double (ON G = uncovered) so ON T can watch for B gap run thru by ON LB (& to encourage DLM to step down with ON T's gap step).
THEN - the gap steps help you account for WHATEVER the DLM does (pinch in - loop out - bull rush over man, etc.). Yes - the two men in the Dbl Team stay square (shoulder to shoulder) until ONE "aborts" to build the wall to the BS/LB. NOTE: On the ON G/ON T double - you can modify the ON Guard's technique ONLY if you are virtually assured that there is NO threat of an A GAP RUN THRU - have ON G take first step with OUTSIDE foot to crotch of DLM (instead of doing that on his SECOND STEP). ON T stays the same!
Get the HANIFAN video I mentioned above (at 9:10 today). It answers ALL your questions with film & diagrams.
There is a clinic in Richmond (July 16 & 17) DEVOTED to Zone & Counter football, as well as the One-Back passing game (more DETAIL than you will believe). It is closed to the public, and there is no cost. Details are below:
Consider this an invitation to the 5th Semi-Annual Football Clinic, to be held at Mills Godwin HS (Richmond, Va) ALL DAY Saturday, July 16. For coaches arriving early on Friday, there will be informal sessions Friday evening as well. For those in no hurry to leave, most of us will be available until 5 PM Sunday afternoon.
There is NO CHARGE. It is a "closed clinic" - by invitation only. We normally keep it to around 20 coaches. Last time (2003) there were coaches from 7-8 states, & all will attest to what a GREAT experience we had. Many playbooks & film were made available, & many coaches spent all night at a local "Kinko's" copying!!!!!
Let me know ASAP if you plan to come. I will try to place all "out of towners" at the same motel, so they can share the costs, & transportation to & from the school.
The speakers will be from among the coaches present. MOST of the lectures will center around the Pro-Style Passing & Running game!
