Are there any HC's out there who coordinate the special teams, ala Frank Beamer at Va. Tech?
How are your special teams responsibilities distributed? We have a special teams coordinator. Then each assistant coach assists him with one or two particular special teams. I, for instance, being the DC, help him with the punt return and FG block teams, as they are primarily defensive personnel. How do you organize your special teams?
Do any of you have what you consider to be unique approaches to special teams, particularly with regard to coaching assignments? We're always looking for an edge in that department. Thanks in advance.
I am a former head coach. I am now a assistant at a h.s. in texas. I do all special teams. I set up drills and responsibilities. The head coach will ask how much time i need that day and he will set up practice around that schedule. He gives me a slot. we work about 30 minutes a day on special teams Monday - Wednesday and I get an hour on Thursday. We play Friday and we have a 10 minute slot pregrame discussion. I decide what type of special teams alignment. During games, the head coach makes all final calls on fakes, onside kicks or punts, but i make all of the adjustments and types of kicks. We are very conservative, so that makes my job easier.
I call the special teams, however I have a coach who is in charge of substitutions in case of injuries. His job is huge! He has a sheet of all personnel on special teams and capable backups at each position. This is how I do it, and I wouldn't do it any other way. I am a total control freak. I hope this helps.

As the HC, I relagate responsibility in the form of a Special teams coach who has total responsibility of planning all special team drill periods. He checks with me on a daily basis for input on what I feel he should cover that day. We incorporate all 5 special team units into our daily practice plan without fail. We count team periods that we work on Monday and Wednesdays and Thursdays as part of that regimen, with all other drills being individual unit practice. I allocate him 7 minutes each day for each unit, staggered throughout the practice. While the rest of the team is on water break, they maybe working kickoff for their 7 minute segment allotted to that unit that day, etc. He is assisted by the DB coach, the DC and the RB's Coach. I reserve the right to make all calls on game nights involving the "special forces" as we call them.
