Teaching O-Line Rules

They must (of course) MEMORIZE the wording (give them written tests, with after practice running off for a 100%, AND an extra "40" added for each miss).

THEN (during a WALK-THRU) have them repeat the rule & walk thru the block so you can check their INTERPRETATION of the rule!!!!!!! MANY REPS!!!!!

coach I agree test and quizzes. Also, on the board put up a front and have each player go up to the board and explain their rules, footwork, etc. If they can teach it they can do it. I it is important that each linemen knows what the other is doing. In the film room I will pause the film and have the players as they did in practice identify the front make their calls explain their footwork, landmarks, etc.

we don't have x's and o's for our offensive linemen anymore. we see so many defensive fronts, it's impossible to draw each and every one. plus, each week, we'll see a different variation from what we've scouted. we are rules, rules, rules. we start in january with verbal quizzes, and continue all spring and summer.

i like drawing the plays for them to get a visual, but from any 1 front, there can be a multiple set of blitzes, slants, stunts, etc. you could spend an hour on one front. we try to keep it real simple and just follow the rules.

we have rules for each play. we also give pop quizzes, etc.

I think it is imperative that you work against mutliple fronts throughout the summer & 2-day sessions. Do NOT implement your entire offense vs. the 5-2 and then reteach vs. the 4-4 when that opponent comes to town. Beginning day 1, we tell our guys to use their base rules. We concentrate on teaching the guys on how to communicate. We do a simple count system on every play, as many of our rules our based on the that counting system. For example, on midline, our PST always blocks #2 and it does not really matter what defense we see. In our trap, our center always thinks in terms of "base -away". We teach the rules and it DOES NOT MATTER how they line up. Now, with this said, we dont implement 1,000,000 plays. We keep it simple and try to maximize our execution percentage.

if you are talking to me, sometimes but not alot. but even if we do, we still follow the rule. guys have a couple seconds to get set and assess the defense. you must incorportate this into your practice. make sure your OL is quickly getting out of the huddle. my guys know they break the huddle, quickly get in a 2 pt stance and assess the defense. then they get down. even then, if in the proper stance with good vision, they should be able to adapt.

Bill, You are so right. When when face a defense that stems we go on a quick count and try to catch them when they are steming. Most of the time they will stop steming.
