I have a couple of dumb questions for you from a guy trying to absorb as much as I can about zone blocking. I coach O-Line at the HS level and we're moving to One Back/Zone blocking next year. I want to be able to teach my guys in a way that will make it easy for them to carry out their assignment and be as successful as possible at it. I've watched a boat load of film (most of which are at the college/pro level, including the Alex Gibbs stuff, Marshall Zone Blocking, Toledo Inside Zone, etc) and I'm wondering if some of the techniques (not the zone blocking itself of course) is doable by HS athletes (not very big or strong). I have several main questions (dumb questions to most) but I'd like to hear anyone's opinion (just gear it to the HS level athlete if possible).
DUMB QUESTION #1: Block IZ and OZ using same tech or block them differently
a. I've read just about every post on the site on IZ/OZ blocking (I'm sure I missed a few) in addition to several books (one of which is Jerry Campbell's Offensive Line Play: A Complete Handbook on Drills and Techniques) and it seems that there are 2 theories on the footwork for IZ and OZ.
Some block IZ and OZ the same way using the same technique, just the OZ rotates faster.
At the HS level, I would figure it would be difficult to get the push of the DLM using the rip BS arm across his face tech being that HS athlete, at the least most of the ones I got, probably aren't strong to get an push on the DLM with one arm while stepping playside. Any opinions about this from people doing it at the HS level? Does this set up IZ/OZ better since the Def sees the same blocking scheme on both plays?
On IZ, If 5 or 4 tech on PST, I get that he is working with PSG to LB (vs 50), but if he is a 4i or is in the gap, is his 1st step toward the 4i/Gap DLM? If so, what specific step do you teach him for IZ (L-step, angled step, etc.)? If OZ for same situation, does PST still step to 4i/Gap DLM even though the play is most likely hitting outside fast?
Others block them differently with the IZ being a solid double team on the DLM and coming off for LB at his level (using L-steps, getting "Hippo" and staying on the track, not getting "wheeled" out, etc). While the OZ is a faster full reach scheme with everyone on a track.
1. At the HS level, I would think that this, at least for IZ, would be easier for the o-line to be successful at because they can sell out on the double team (it may be tougher to get to LB though if he's playing fast over the top, but that's what the cutback is for though I guess).
a. On IZ, if the PST has a 4 or 5tech, his is stepping to his outside # right? And PSG is working with PST up to LB but does he have to now take a bucket step (since PST is not stepping toward him) or is it still just an L-step?
b. Since these IZ/OZ are slightly different, does that help the Def since read it?
iii. Am I reading too much into this or are both theories basically the same and are people having success with it at the HS level?
I guesse this theory would be similar to the Stetch-Base/Stretch Double & Rip-Reach/Pull-Takeover theory that I read on this site, right?
DUMB QUESTION #2: If DLM is lined up in B-gap (his outside foot toe-to-toe inline with the inside foot of OT) is the T or G covered? Does it revert back to where the LB is to determine cov/uncovered?
DUMB QUESTION #3
1. OZ vs 50, DT's in 4tech, N is 0, OLB's are 9's. According to the cov/uncovered rule that I read on this site. The TE should see that his BS teammate is covered and that should then tell him that he is blocking MAN, right? The PST and PSG would Deuce the 4 to the PSLB, BSG and C would Ace the N to BSLB and the BST would Base the BS4 tech, right? OR would you guys Gang (3 on 3) that or is that not possible? But doesn't that break the rule of never pulling a
2. OZ vs 50, DT's in 5tech PS, how would you handle that since it would now be tougher for him to reach the DT in a 5? Would you have TE block down on the 5 and pull the PST around for the 9? Other suggestions?
DUMB QUESTION #4
1. Coach Campbell's book (title above), makes a distinction between the "tracks" on a Combo block and Zone block
a. Combo Block track- is "straight up the field (north and south)"
b. Zone Block track- "the angle of the track for the lead blocker is the angle from his stance to where his hat would be on the outside hip of the defender"
c. My question: Is IZ considered a Combo Block (like I've read on this site a few times) or a Zone Block? Or is this just semmantics
Bottom-line is, I would like to know if, at the HS level, we should/can block the IZ and OZ the same way or whether at the HS level it is better to solidify the double team on the IZ. Also, I'm looking into buying Coach Campbell Offensive Line Play - Zone Blocking 1 and 2. Has anyone seen these tapes and do they answer some of these questions (if so, I'll get them)? I very much open to any and all comments/input/critiques. I thank you in advance for listening to my babbling, I hope you can understand what I'm asking. Thanks and you efforts on this site are greatly appreciated.
