Best run defense scheme?

you're gonna get tons of replies.....each one will be different based on what each coach has a belief or experience in. personally speaking, a 40 based defense (especially a split) may be the easiest to teach and install due to it's ease with which you can adjust to the wide variety of formations an offense will throw at you.

Anything that gets 9 in the box is always good! We run a 3-4 double invert to achieve this.

Outside of that, the 46 Bear has been a nightmare for our run game.

I like anything in the 50 family of defenses. 5-3, 5-2 with a double invert look. Those are my favorites to use.

Thanks for the reply. I am having a tough time visualizing the 5/3 you described, my fault not yours. I understand the backside 5 being your normal DE but who is your backside 4 that is eagling to a 2 tech. That is the part I don't understand.

The other positions make sense: shaded nose, 4-5 tackle, and 6-7-9 DE and the LB. If you could clear up the backside that would be great.

Sure Coach, happy to. Hope this will help you. Being old school with 41 years on the field now, I still use the numbering system I always have used, just as most coaches, until the younger guys started to change numbers around.

0 technique= head up on center
1 tech= inside shoulder of guard (now called 2i by most)
2 tech= head up on guard
3 tech= outside shoulder of guard
4i tech= (or you will hear coaches use the term 4 tite) inside shoulder of the DT
4 tech= head up on DT
5 tech= outside shoulder of tackle
7 tech= inside shoulder of the TE
6 tech= head up on TE
9 tech= outside shoulder of the TE
ghosted 9 or 5 tech= wider alignment than normal 5 or 9 tech on TE or backside 5 tech if formation has a split x end.

If you are looking at a double tight end formation, the numbers are exactly the same on both sides of the center.

Linebackers are assigned technique numbers by how they align in relation to the down linemen and add a 0 to that number. In other words, if a LB is aligned directly behind a DLM in a 3 tecnique, he is said to be in a 30 technique, if behind a 4 he is said to be in a 40 tech, etc.

My numbering system for our Offensive backs are as follows: QB-#1, RB-#2, FB-#3 Flanker-#4 (a bit different than most). My spread receivers are Alphas instead of numerics. Trips side= X on and A+B off the LOS. Backside Y on and C off. That is how I call my spread alignment in my 3 x 2. Our gaps are like anyone else's, A + b + C (same on both side of course).

My hole numbering system is a bit different than most in that I have no 2 or 3 hole. So, to the rip side the holes are ) 0-4-6-8. To the liz side, 1-5-7-9. Just my way.
