Coaches,
What are your thoughts on your players using supplements such as protein shakes and creatine? Do you think it is ok to encourage your players to use these supplements to gain weight? I know encouraging players to use supplements can be a very sticky situation...so if you do this how far do you go with it? Now, im no doctor but I see nothing wrong with the use of protein shakes or creatine. If you really think about it telling a kid to eat more is really no different than telling him to drink a protein shake. So, what are your thoughts?
I would check with your AD or even your states high school league web site and see if they have any type of statement dealing with creatine. In Minnesota we received a letter in the mail about 4 years ago with a statement from the high school league dealing with creatine. It said something to the effect that there has not been enough studies on the negitive effects of creatine and as high school coaches we should not be recommending the use of creatine. The statement did not say anything about protiens or any other supplements.
This is not my opinion, I'm just sharing the information that was sent out to all the coaches in Minnesota.

I really do not think it is appropriate for a HS coach to suggest that his players take supplements. HS kids have so much testosterone flowing in their bodies that they don't need them! What they DO need are coaches who show them how to get after it in the weightroom, and teach them about proper diet and nutrition, and the value of rest. If a kid eats alot of clean foods he's gonna get what he needs. College? They are men and they may make their own decisions, but I wouldn't trust a supplement company w/ the health of my son/ daughter, and that is our cardinal rule of coaching...
