Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We need some help blocking a 3 step drop out of a unbalanced o-line TE G C G T T . We are mainly an option team but need to improve our 3 step passing game. Blocking out of balanced with the TE next to the tackle is not a problem but our base formation is unbalanced and we don't want to have to get balanced to pass. It has been too much of a give-away in tendancies in the past. Also, any suggestions for some simple easy to read 3 step routes?
Thank you,
Paul

Coach,
You will probably get some more informative posts on this topic from other coaches but I will put in my 2 cents. Assuming that your opponents do adjust to your unbalanced set I see no reason why you cant just use your base pass pro...wheather it be slide, BOB or whatever. If they are not adjusting to the unbalanced set then I would be audibling to a run play in a hurry. What are some of the problems you are encountering with your pass pro from your unbalanced set?
Thanks for the info guys. I'll check the website. The problems are if you want to release 4 you only end up with a guard and there is too much pressure on the edge even with the back. Like I said, balanced isn't the problem; it's when we stay unbalanced. Thanks

We used slide protection in 2 backs for our 30 pass game for the past four years. Our line slides toward the 2 receiver side and the FB blocks away. We thought we'd want to release the TB into a route, but to be honest, we never threw him the ball. So we changed to max protection, and the TB became an extra blocker toward the slide side and we just have 3 receivers. In your situation, I would slide toward the overload and have both the FB and TB block toward the short side of the unbalanced if your having trouble controling the edge on that side.
How long have you been running the unbalanced formation as your base offense? We're a 3-wide option team, but last year we ran the unbalanced more and more as the season went on (really liked the adjustment the 4-3 teams gave us). I've been trying to find more information and other coaches who run the unbalanced for more than just a few plays. Any chance we could share some information? I know you said you were interested in reads for the 3-step passes, or I'd be glad to share what we do in other areas of our offense. Where do you coach?

We run that set VERY MUCH. Here is what we do, please keep in mind our schemes may be different than yours.
Our base is double slot, so we put FB on DE and slide opposite with the OL. In your set and using slide protection, your overbalanced OT IS your FB. He is on the DE and the rest of the OL slides to the TE. Now, sometimes our TE stays in and sometimes not. IF he stays in, he slides out to the DE. IF your TE releases, he can be easily replaced by either the FB or HB. We see mostly a 1 & 5 tech on that weak side. The center slides to the 1, and the G slides weak and picks up B Gap blitz. TE, FB or HB is on DE - depending on if he releases or not.

We have been running unbalanced as our base formation since our school was opened in 1987. Our 1st head coach brought it over with him from the other high school in our district (We are in Vista, Ca (Rancho Buena Vista)). We still feel the unbalanced is a great base set because it really cranks a defense. What's interesting is that in our leage here in SD there are 3 teams that are unbalanced tackle over as their base formation (Us, Vista, Carlsbad). The Carlsbad coach used to coach at Vista as well and took the offense with him when he left around 10 years ago. As for us our main plays are ML, IV, Trap, Load (belly) option, as well as others.
