Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I see where C.W. Post plays their inside linebackers in 40 and 10 techniques respectively. Does anyone else do this? Do they adjust their alignment vs. balanced formations? I'd appreciate any insights.
We run our backers at 20s - head up over the guards in basically the same defensive front as C.W. Post's. He has his strongside backer playing out to D gap so he moves his out some. His backers reads the full backfield flow where as our middles react first to the FB or Near back.
We've played our linebackers in 20 techniques the past few years as well but was interested in the C. W. Post alignment. Just curious, why couldn't you align your linebackers in the 40, 10 alignment and key fullback?
let me get this straight...
he plays a 425 defense with his ILB at a 40 strong and a 10 technique? is the 10 techn. strong or weak? what is the alignment of the OLB?
Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my GUNS!!!
You should be easily able to play the backers at 40 and 10. I actually believe that he plays the strongside one at 40i. I know that they do that so the SILB can scrape over the top to D gap when his key sends him there. I believe that is a somewhat unique part of his defense. We keep ours more around the 20 techs because our SILBs gap is A strong so we keep him closer to it. C.W. Post has the 10 tech (weakside backer) play the strong A gap to the weak B gap depending on flow.
His system is obviously very sound as his stats are awesome. There backers read both backs for flow and then Guards as under keys. I feel that it is a bit tough for our small school kids so we stay with the FB or near back with the Guards as under keys. One part of his system which we have been working on is the "windows" and "doors" concept where as the MLB can play over the top of the off-tackle area if it is bunched up and scrape to D gap. If the off-tackle area is open the backer will take it of course.
"where is the weakside OLB aligned? how does he defend the weakside iso? its seems that his ILB are aligned alot like a 43 look. "
C.W. Post has the weak OLB line up in the apex between the SE and EMOLOS at about 4 yards deep. (I'm not positive about the depth. He is not responsible for the B gap Iso. That belongs to the ILB. (10 tech) The OLB's rule concerning off-tackle plays is that he is not to go inside until the ball has committed to the hole. He has a "5 yard fence". That means that he has to go around an imaginary fence that starts at the EMOLOS and extends 5 yards downfield. By doing that he has time to make sure that the ball doesn't bounce outside.
Now if there is an Iso coming directly at him the OLB attacks the FB head on. He can be as deep as 3 yards. (C.W. Post rule) This is because they often in their robber package where the FS will fill the alley and play off of the OLBs angle. If the OLB comes hard to the FB and the ball bounces outside the FS will widen. If the OLB plays soft and takes on the FB late or is kicked out the FS inside of him in the alley. They encourage the OLB to be aggressive to force the issue.
