Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
For those of you that run a Spread offense what benefits do you see by running out of a 3 wide with a TE versus using 4 wides? In what ways do you feel having a TE in there helps your offense?
We use both. We feel the TE formations helps the running game. Vs. 50 def fronts we even like to get into 2 TE formations and run all check with me.
In pass pro we feel it is better to be in 4 wide because it is easier to see who is blitzing. With a TE you bring the force players closer to the formation and the FS does not have to move very far to cover the TE on man coverage making it a tougher read for the QB to see who is blitzing off the edge.

With a TE an offense is at its toughest point. With the gun run with an arc release by the TE he can lead the QB out the backside depending upon the read by the QB on the backside defender. Coach CAmpbell
Coach JD or any other coach, Can you elaborate on how you believe the TE helps your running game. Remember I am talking about a spread Gun offense. There are 2 reasons why I am investigating the use of a TE this season. First reason is, I believe we may have one. New kid, just came out this year, athletic, and seems to have a body that could do the job. Second, is we had a few games last season where the Rover/OLB/SS whatever you wanna call him was a physical mismatch on my slot receivers. This would kill our Zone play sometimes. Also, teams would move that player late in our cadence to a position where blocking him was very difficult. Basically, I am just trying to decide whether I will gain enough benefits with the use of a TE that would make all the necessary coaching and gameplanning worthwhile. Thanks for all responses.
We are 75% inside zone from gun run just to let you know what we do with our gun run game. We would see the same thing with teams rolling up the SS/Invert/Alley player late in the cadience and we were out numbered or our slots could not block a stud. We used to just try and account for the invert with formations and slots but we both know that always doens'nt work. When we use the TE lets say vs. a 4-4 defense. The TE and OT are responsible for the DE and the invert. The will zone the DE and eyes to the invert. Teams used to slant the DE C gap and bring the invert off the edge but now with the zone scheme they cannot do that. If they line up with a 7 tech and roll the invert up on the LOS we fan block the inside zone. Vs. teams that line up with the DE in a 7 tech we also like to run the stretch play with pullers. The TE will pin block the DE, the OT will pull for the invert the OG will base the 3 tech, the center will pull and mirror the PS Lber and the BS OG and OT zone up the back side. Having the TE to a side allows us to better match up vs the defense and the slot can block the FS or run a bubble route to help hold the defenders.
I hope I have helped. I kinda rambled on.

If you get into a TE trips set (we call it overload) you can have the best of both worlds like coachjd described. You can account for the invert with zone blocking, and also run bubbles (etc) to also account for defenders.

Using the TE in TE trips can be an advantage because there are options for you on how to account for the invert and the DE. If it is an even front, the end will be stretched and leave your tackle uncovered to chip the 3 tech and get next level if you want to run zone or stretch. If you tighten the slot down to a "nasty" you can run sweep by cracking with the slot on the DE and pull with TE and or PST with the TE leading up on the invert and the tackle getting first color that shows.
