Our old OC at our HS called the head coach the day before camp started and told him he couldn't coach this year. This guy was going to run the one back offensive very similarly to the way a lot of you guys run it (particulary Coach Mountjoy). Blocking rules/techniques were also going to be the same with the old OC as most of you do on this site.
Fortunately, (literally at the last minute) we were able to secure the services of another OC who had just resigned his previous position. His offense at his last school was very effective and gave us a tough time (we played against him last year). My question is that he seems to do things a bit different than I've read on this site from the "prominent posters".
1. He likes his splits, depending on speed and ability of the DLM, to be as wide as possible, up to 3', to create running lanes. The better and faster the DLM the tighter the split can be. I've read on this site some people saying that they use wider splits but the replies to those messages by others on this site gave me the impression that it was unsound (at least for zone blocking). Any thoughts on this?
2. He runs OZ (blocker fairly similar to the way most of you guys do it), but he runs an IZ CUT play and not a true IZ. On this play it is blocked similar to OZ except the OLM are letting the defenders beat them (NOT vertical up field into backfield obviously) and riding them out while the RB has a predetermined cut-back on the play. The idea here being that this play starts out looking exactly like the OZ except at the last minute the RB cuts back against all the defensive pursuit. Are anyone you familiar with this play and how it is taught to the OLM because they seem to be struggling with it a bit.
I know this offense is very effective because, like I said, I saw it happen first hand but I was wondering what opinions you guys had about it.
As always, thanks for the help.
