We are a middle return team and couldn't get my front five to block dirt last year. I tried all I could think of. I switched them around, replaced them, and no matter what we got the same result. So I think it might be a scheme thing. We have them retreat 10 yards with their eyes on whom theya re to block. On the retreat they are to get bunched up as close as possible. Then they are to wait for their man to get within five yards of them, attack him, and drive him into the water cooler. So what can be done to improve our production up front? Is it a scheme thing?
I need help!
try having the two outside left front men cross to the right and 'earhole' two attackers, the two outside right front men cross and 'earhole two attackers while the middleman retreats until the ball is picked up by your return man and form a deep wedge with your second and third row to allow your return man to get upfield beyond the two outside contain men.
One thing you have to consider is how far your opponents are kicking. If they are kicking pretty deep, say consistently inside the ten with pretty good hang time, then your drop is not nearly deep enough. Think about this if you can. If you align your guys on the fifty and have them retreat to the forty, they are going to have to block this guy that is coming full dpeed at them for about five or six seconde (hang time plus return time of thirty yards) If you drop the say 20-25 yards, they have more time to get back and set and allow the defender to come to them. Also, now all they have to do is simply get in the way of the defender for a second maybe two. Now by dropping this deep, I would imagine that a wedge would be tough. INstead I would assign a defender to each of your frontliners. One additional thought: we don't align right on the fifty. We align our front line wit one foot on the 47 and the other on the 46. This gives as a little advantage on our retreat. If a team sees this and tries to onside to take advantage of us (which hasn't happened) that is fine, our guys can now just fall forward to pick up the ball and they have a little more reaction time.
Yes, you probably need to drop deeper! But, it very well could be your personnel. Some coaches try to not use first stringers. This may be your problem. Also, if you are using first stringers with poor results, maybe they are taking the play off.
