At the end of the season before our banquet I printed an in-depth nutritional packet for all of our players and parents. I wanted the parents to be aware of proper eating habits and the benefits of eating correctly as they are the ones usually responsible for the players' meals. We have seen great improvement in size and strength thus far in our off-season.

The packet includes equations for daily calorie intake as well as a list of good choice foods for them to be eating.

1. Stay away from any type of pop or soda do not drink any carbonated drink.
2. Read labels - if anything has more than 20g sugar per serving stay away.
3. Drink water - one of the biggest down falls to training and competition is dehydration. Gatorade etc are pre and post competitive drinks - if an athlete "feels thirsty" they are dehydrated. Your brain, organs and muscle fiber need pure water.
4. As a coach - get facts about alkiline / acidic base (Web MD is a great resource or look to AMA guidelines)
6. As a coach - get fact about glycemic index - these two things are most important in healthy vs non-healthy
7. Remember most resources are trying to sell supplements and most MD's are general practicioners - you need information on athletes. ACSM has great resources as well as NSCA. Get the facts from an accredeted institution.
8. Remember these are kids and mom and dads who are on a hectic schedule. Dont give them a bunch of sceinetific jargon. Give them one or two concepts and mabey one or two specific things to do.

I was very fortunate to have as a personal friend, the head strength and conditoning coach at Clemson Univ. Prior to coming to Clemson, he held the same position with the Detroit Lions of the NFL. Each year he would publish a complete S&C manual with all he latest updates on proper dieting for the athlete. I would pass on the info to my guys.

I HAVE A LIVER DISEASE THAT ENDED MY COACHING CAREER AFTER 42 YEARS. A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO THE CONDITION ACCORDING TO MY DOCTORS WAS A VIRUS AND TO MUCH SODIUM IN MY DIET. ALWAYS BEING AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF ADDING SALT AT THE TABLE TO MY FOOD, I WAS NOT GUILTY OF THAT. WHAT GOT ME WAS THE FACT I NEVER CONSIDERED THE SODIUM CONTENT( SALT THAT OCCURS NATURALLY IN FOODS) OF WHAT I ATE. NOW, BELIEVE ME I AM ACCUTELY AWARE OF IT!!! I WOULD HEARTILY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE, NOT JUST YOUR ATHLETES, THAT THEY LEARN TO LOOK AT LABELS AND TO NOT EXCEED THE 2400 MILLIGRAM LIMIT OF SODIUM PER DAY!!! IT IS VERY EASY TO OVER DO IT. FOR EXAMPLE, A SLICE OF PIZZA HAS UPWARDS OF 600 MGS ON AVERAGE AND HOW MANY FOLKS EAT JUST ONE SLICE OF PIZZA? I HAVE HAD TO LEARN TO USE SPICES WHICH ARE, FOR THE MOST PART, SODIUM FREE AND I HAVE NOT HAD AN ADDED DROP OF TABLE SALT OR SALT SUBSTITUTE FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS NOW. YOUNG PEOPLE NEVER THINK MUCH ABOUT HOW THEY TREAT THEIR BODIES TODAY WILL AFFECT IT LATER ON IN LIFE. IF YOU TEACH THEM TO START PAYING ATTENTION NOW, YOU WILL BE DOING THEM ONE OF THE GREATEST FAVORS THEY CAN HAVE DONE FOR THEM.
