Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have been drawing up Joe Bugel's play action protection off of the counter. I have a few problems. First, against a 5-3 (9,4I,0,4I,5) how do you acount for the MLB? The only solution I can find is for the TB to take him after his fake. Second, against a 4-4, or any split defense for that matter, who has the 4th man off of the edge? I assume you have to keep the BSG home instead of pulling him to the playside EMLOS. Both of these options really takes away from the play fake, but I thinnk gets everybody accounted for. Am I on the right track? Thanks a lot.
Actually those defenses pose no problem because it is full turnback (except for Off G pulling), & is EIGHT MAN PROTECTION zoning areas, not assigned men! MLB in 5-3 will be picked up by whoever turns to the gap he tries to come thru (ALL gaps are accounted for). RB gets #4 off edge in 4-4. Don't change the protection for these defenses, it HOLDS UP!
If protection is right from "DOUBLE RT): Protection call right but turnback left:
--T--G--C--G--T--Y
H
H blocks C gap
LT squeezes inside B gap (buy time for Center & if he gets there quick - hinge outside & help)
LG pull & take first man on LOS outside Y's down block (D gap right)
Center blocks all the way back left (thru A to B gap)
RG blocks A gap to his left (which, of course, includes a Nose on Center)
RT blocks B gap to his left
Y blocks C gap to his left
RB after fake take S/S (or any #4 coming off edge to TE side) Slide out in flat if no one comes.
You use TURNBACK principles (if the defender you are turning back to is a LB - set on DLM to give man turning back towards you "BODY PRESENCE" but eyeball LBer in case he comes.
Thanks coach. You will have to bear with me, as Pass Pro is the area I know least about. I still don't know how to account for the fourth man weak in a split defense, as there are only three men turning back (C, BST, H). I know most people will bring #4 off the strong edge, but I also think most DC's are going to see only 3 men protecting weak and try to hit you there. What do you do? Also, what are the receiver rules on the over/under and the double post? Looking for lankmarks and depth of routes. I also assume the QB's read is the FS on both of the routes. I appreciate the help.
in the formation I drew in the LAST post - it is totally balanced. You can call the protection EITHER way - put the call to the side they align 4 (usually given away by F/S cheating to that side - the side they wish to bring 4 - over H/Y). Being in a oneback set - I GUARANTEE they will not bring over 7 & you have EIGHT protecting!!!!!
Over/under = "Post" breaks at 12 yds & "IN" breaks at 14.
Double post = both have a 12 yd breaking point - the outside man to the near upright & the inside man toi the far pylon.
What STATE are you coaching in?

I'm at a small school in Oklahoma, Class A. I wasn't thinking about checking the play at the line, as we try to stay away from doing much of that, although we do have a smart group coming up. I was also thinking of the I formation. We do get in oneback formations, but usually remove the TB and leave the FB so we can run FB trap which is our base play. We did start lining up in the formation you drew up quite a bit last year and motion the H around to run Iso, Toss, etc. We run five basic schemes in our offense, FB trap, QB trap (w/ pitch), Iso, Toss, and Counter. I want to add the playaction we are talking about, as it is a natural progression off of something we are already doing and we haven't been effective enough with our deep passing game. I don't want to get out in four wides and all that to get the ball deep, I want to protect the QB and hurt people that stay in 8-man fronts, so this looks like the answer.
Checks RARELY are needed if your game plan your formations to DICTATE where they line up & work the protection from there. We sometimes go 3-4 games WITHOUT any checks, & if we did check it would simply be OPPOSITE! It can be run from the I with the FB taking the edge rusher weak - same as if he was H/Y on THAT side.
We don't get 4 weak vs oneback sets, but we sure as hell did vs Pro-I! If they play 4 weak vs us - not sure they would be sound vs run strong AND pass!
