Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
For the zone running plays can you make adjustments during the game based on match-ups? For example lets say a certain play calls for a duece on the 3tech to the sam linebacker, and that the guard is a better player than the 3 technique. Would you allow the guard to base the three tech, and have tackle block the sam with out having to worry about the three tech.? Do you talk about this in your o-line manual, I just ordered it.
Coach, If you don't mind I would like to throw in my view to your question. Coach C will probably also deal with this. As with any rules, there are times when you want to change-up because of personnel. It may be dangerous, however, when running a zone play. (Inside/Outside Zones) Take your example for instance. Lets say that you lock your guard on the 3 and send the tackle to the LB. It may work well. But what if the 3 slants out with the LB coming around to the A gap. Now you can't come off the blocks to pick him up. Also the steps that both your linemen take are necessary to match the blocking with where the back is getting the handoff. Getting to defenders to early is just as bad as getting to a defender late. However on plays, such as the option, you can adjust your blocking accordingly. I had probably the best guard this year that I have ever coached. So when blocking the 3 tech he didn't need a hand check, etc. when we ran the Inside Veer or Outside Veer.
note: Inthetrenches and myself were answering at the same time. Both very similar responses.
You wouldn't want to do that on the 3 tech if running the inside zone. It wouldn't work because that 3 tech will probably make the play or at least be able to if he stunts. If running outside, you can use the stretch stepping to pick up players. Inside zone, you have to pick up the inside guys better and that would necessitate the OG and OT deuce comboing the 3 tech to sam. Don't stretch the inside zone.
