We are going to run the midline this year. Some of my coaches have a misconception regarding option football. They say the midline is a fumbe waiting to happen b/c the read is so close to the QB. My contention is the QB is stationary making the mesh (and read) easier. Like anything you gotta rep it but is my assessment correct? We are a multiple formation team and do not run midline all the time. I think that is another misconception regarding option is that you have to run it as the offense to be effective. I disagree but am looking for more thoughts.

It is easy for the reason you mentioned as well as the offensive guard coming underneath the read.if the read tries to cross his face, the guard just washes him through.Groundchuck,I am counting on you to keep option football alive!
What are your splits? If they are tight, I maybe understand some of their concern. If your splits are 2'+, then I don't really see a problem. From my experience and observations, I see very few fumbles from midline. Mind you, I'm no expert on the subject. And as you stated, with good reps fumbling shouldn't be an issue.
A question to all out there. How many of you run midline at a 2 tech?
