This is a great site and I am very happy I found it.
My problem is we had a horrible time running the inside zone this year against penetrating 3 and 1 techniques. Our rules for running the inside zone are stretch base if covered and stretch double if uncovered. But when a team had a strong shaded nose on our center, that nose gave us fits because the center had to stretch step and block him by himself. Or when we faced a strong shaded 3 tech and backside 1 tech penetrating, we couldn't get them blocked.
Can you guys tell me what I am doing wrong or if there is a way to get those penetrating 3 and 1 techs blocked better? We run the inside zone with the back aiming to hit the b gap or outside shade of the OG.

Coach Allen I can help you with this are you running with one or two backs. If running with two backs are you developing your inside game with split flow. When running towards a strong side 1 tech. you would get an ACe combo from the center and playside guard working up to playside LBer. With a strongside 1 tech. you will get a backside duece combo on the 3 tech. to backside LBer. Lets start here and I'll be glad to help you with this. Coach Campbell
We are mostly a one back offense. We see the over front with a 9 and 3 strong and a 1 and 5 weak and we see an under front with a 9, 5 and strong shaded nose and a 3 and 5 weak.
We had fits blocking a penetrating strong shaded nose against the under front and a penetrating 3 and backside 1 against the over front. They stuffed our inside zone alot.
Here is how we blocked the two fronts:
Over = TE try to reach outside shoulder of 9 tech, OT stretch step and look to get inside shoulder of 9tech, OG stretch step on 3 tech to outside shoulder, Center stretch step to get to inside shoulder of 3 tech, backside OG stretch step to playside shoulder of 1 tech and backside OT stretch step to backside shoulder of 1 tech.
Under = TE stretch to base 9, OT stretch to outside shoulder of 5 tech, OG stretch to inside shoulder of 5 tech, Center stretch step to playside shoulder of shaded nose, backside OG stretch step on 3 tech and OT stretch step on 3 tech's backside shoulder

Coach vs the under front the 1 shade strong for inside should be getting combinationed with the guard and center. With 9 tech. and a 7 man box the inside zone game will take your tailback out the backside with cutback or first daylight. Remember this the footwork of zone running plays will be dictated by how wide the ball is being exchanged between the back and the QB. Coach CAmpbell

Coach Allen the footwork for zone schemes will be dictated by the angle at which they read the back getting the ball. Example you push an inside zone vertically whenever the quarterback gives the ball to the back on the outside hip of the to the playside hip of the center. Whenever the ball is handed off on the inside hip of the tackle to the inside hip of the tight end then use stretch footwork. If the ball is tossed then you get fast flow linebackers so the offensive line uses fast zone footwork to compensate for their movement. Coach CAmpbell
When running the inside zone, use base and combo calls and use the near ear rule. That way you get the first level blocked and pushed vertically with hippo. If you stretch the inside zone, penetrating 3 and 1 techs will blow the play up many times. Especially shaded on the center. If you run stretch and outside zone, that is a different story but not on inside zone, you have to get the first level penetrators picked up with combos.
