Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm curious what type of stance you teach, where your DL are looking and what they are aiming at? Here is what I teach.
I teach a narrow base. I usually say feet at armpit width. Stagger in the feet should be about toe to heel. About 65-75% of weight should be forward on the hand. Hips higher than shoulders. All of our DL are shaded so we have our covered hand down. Eyes should be on our target which is the near number of the OL, any ball movement should be picked up in the peripheral vision. On movement, they explode out of their stance and shoot their hands to the target. Then they react according to the block.

When mirror stepping the goal is to be in the same position as you where in prior to the snap of the ball. The mirror step is taught two read and react on the second step. Coach CAmpbell
Our DL are 1 gap players who usually are lined up in their gap responsibility shaded on a man. Unless we have a specific stunt on, we do not shoot the gap, we attack our man, and react to what our target (near # of OL) does. We use the same concept of Stimulus Response that Coach Golla uses, however we have simplified it to 4 basic reactions that we teach.
When mirror stepping, what happens first on movement. Are the hands attacking the OL followed by that first step once the OL declares which way he is stepping.

Mirror stepping - reading keys as a 2 gap player
If O-lineman over you steps to his right in an attempt to either reach or hook you then you will work to your left while fighting across his face...if he steps to his left then you do just the opposite.
If O-lineman over you pulls then you get in his hip pocket and follow him by shuffling down the LOS.
If he releases inside then you close down on the gap in which he released.
amen brother. i do not tell my DL to watch ball. they watch movement of OL. especially in a heads up position, your step should mirror the step of the OL. then get off the block. nicholson is absolutely right on all comments.
This is true "helmet reading". Most people who say they read helmets are actually trying to get into the O-linemen and then react to his block. IMO, real helmet reading is staying lateral and, as you guys are calling it, mirror stepping.
For those of you who are helmet readers, what steps do your down linemen take on a reach? We have been teaching a crossover step with our inside foot for 20+ years. I think most people teach a step with their outside foot, but this doesn't cover as much ground as the crossover. Most people are leary of crossing feet, but I have always found if you keep a low pad level, you will rarely get tripped up or lose your balance even though your feet are crossed for a brief moment. Any thought? Always looking for a better way!!
