WE will face a team this season that gave us a bunch of looks where the box was a 4-1 but they brought both OLB's, which in essence made it a 6-1. What was weird (unsound) was that the DE's often didn't pinch inside so they wound up with 2 players in the C gap. We had some success with a Zone option look where we would use that blitzing OLB as the read. I really like it away from trips cause of the man coverage pulling 3 defensive players opposite the side we are running to. We also ran the short route from Robinson & Coverdale. Slot runs seam/post & the Split runs a slant. We had some success with quick hitters up the middle but sometimes these OLB's would get there and smack us in the backfield. I am hoping some of you guys who run the spread can help me out here with some additional ideas on attacking this look. I am also investigating the QB trap. Thanks for any comments or help.
Yes, QB trap sounds very good vs the 6-1. How about bubble screen to #3 on the trips side. If they are playing man and the 2 outside receivers are cracking should have a play. Middle screen to the TB. Have the TB set off the OT like his is going to pass pro and have him come back into the middle. You have all the DL and ILB blocked let the OLB come free. Just a couple of thoughts.
Last year we had a team who would blitz the MLB and one OLB so we put the QB at 7 yrds deep in the gun and went no backs almost the entire game. They could not match up speed wise with our 5 receivers and ran shallow cross, mesh, and would run 4 verticals and run 1 receiver on under routes. Because they blitzed the MLB almost every play the crossing routes were always open.
