I know this is kind of different but I'm looking for suggestions.
Our game field and practice field both need some work done on the grass (or I should say lack of). We plan on aerating the field after the season is done. Should we reseed, give it a good weed N Feed, or both.
Re-soding the field is not an option. We are just looking at some way to improve the facility. I would rather play on grass not a clover field.
Excellent Choice.

I'm not speaking from tons of experienc just from the work we do in our own yard at our house. (My wife spends tons of time with flowers, yard decorations etc... so she expects a nice green lawn)
I would aerate the lawn after the season and again in late spring. I would wait with the grass seed until next spring as well. I would go to a local building center (home depot, menards) and talk to one of their lawn and garden guru's and find out what type of fertilizer you want to put down in the fall, spring, and summer. Weed and Feed I will put down in May and more of a turf builder in Late June or early July.
And finally you need to water the heck out of the grass and don't mow it too short in the summer. Keep it a little longer in the summer and then you can start to mow it a little lower when the season is close to starting.

I think the key to your question is the condition of the soil on your fields. If they have been bare long enough for you to lose your good topsoil, it will help to aerate but I don't think you'll get the results your looking for. A good 4 to 6 inch layer of topsoil on top of the fields will do wonders. You won't have to seed on top of the soil, the grass you have will climb on through. As far as fertilizer goes, you need to take the dirt you've got into the county extension office to get it tested. They'll tell you what you need to fertilize with and the cost is very minimal. In my experience I've never used "weed and feed" or any other pre-emergent. I think they aren't that effective in relation to their cost. We spray in the spring with 2-4-D to kill broadleaf weeds, again with 2-4-D at the end of school, and 2-3 times during the summer with a mix of 2-4-D and MSMA(kills crabgrass). Having said all of that, the most important thing in having a good field is water and plenty of it. Water, water, water, and more water. These are the things that work for us, maybe some of it will help your situation. Good luck.
