Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We run a 4 wide spread shotgun offense. This year we have made a commitment to the zone play. My question is this, versus a 4-1 front do you block all 5 defenders in the front or do you have the QB still read backside defender? I would like to block all 5 and make it an automatic give. Let's say you got a OLB splitting the difference between the slot and the OT & a cover 2 look behind that. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
We have not done this, but the Univ. of Minnesota will make a stay call with the BS OT and have him block the BS DE instead of working with the BS OG to a 2nd level that does not have a lber to block.

I'd have to look up my notes on the UNLV/Utah clinic tapes (not at home right now)... BUT...
I think I remember that against 5 in the box they were making that an automatic give - but I do not think they were blocking that backside DE. My guess is that you could still control him with the 'threat' of the QB keep - just as the naked boot on an Ins Zone under C helps keep him honest as well. This would also gain you an extra blocker that the POA... might be able to come off on a force player with an OL.
6 in the box was a read on the Backside C-Gap defender (notice it is NOT the DE - allows you to deal with stunts, etc).
7 in the box was a check to the option or a pass.
Hope this helps - although I do not see anything wrong with still reading that backside DE (or C-Gap player).
