We have a real attitude problem with our team. The problem is we do not have one. Our kids are lifeless in practice and generally indifferent to everything. Most of these kids were starters on a team that went to the quarter finals last year. Our staff is ubeat and energetic. We have tried everything we can think of to get them to practice better and play harder, but in the scrimmages when one thing goes wrong then the ship sinks. If any of you have any suggestions how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Our situation is not perfect here, but something we do that has helped a little bit is a thing we call "putups." A putup is a compliment or word of encouragement like "you'll get it next time" or "you can do it" or "way to keep a wide base." We pick 2 or 3 players each day that we as coaches are going to listen for. If we don't hear a putup from them, the team does up/downs. After one day of punishment, we usually never have to say anything again. We also look for genuine "putups" at critical times in practice to stress the importance of TEAM. Not sure if that will help you or not.
We try to create some situations which force them to be competive. Example- 7 on 7 if we don't get a pick we run after. If they get 2 picks I take off a sprint at the end of practice. If they get 4 knockdowns I take a spint off. We do this through out practice, if we are not getting what we want they will be running extra or doing bear crawls that moment. We also as coaches try to create some tention during live drills as a sence of personal pride and not accepting being beat. We get in guys ears and talk it it up to challege the EGO some. We also break it up after a good practice by not running and breaking out a huge sheet of plastic and we have a massive slip and slide (about 1 a year type of thing, end of camp).
