Im a young O-Line Player and O-Line Coach and I have only played in systems with 2+ foot splits. I recently tried to narrow my teams splits slightly and was over ruled by a coach.

Why do NFL teams have shorter splits? Because defensive players are faster and stronger?

It allows them to work hip to hip as they combo to 2nd level defenders. JD
