Does anyone have a SYSTEMATIC way to teach kids how to prepare for a game?
That questions even sounds strange to me, kinda like taking an art and making it a science, but the reason I'm asking is that I just feel like I'm in the minority now as a coach when it comes to what kids should be doing / how they should be acting the day before and the day of a game.
I was never a "loose" player. I would get more and more pissed and sadistic every moment leading up to a game. I was quiet, focused and kept to myself. Today it seems like kids think (and some coaches enable) that they can just show up and turn it on.
What do you teach your kids?
what are YOUR expectations?
Just like about anything with kids you have to give them some guidence. I am not a big beliver of game facing all day, but do want them so start focusing on it at about 2:00 pm for a 7:00 game. Everyone is different when it comes to preperation, but I always emphisise no screwing around and the focus is on assignment, alignment, and execution. I explain to them about visualizing themselves making a block or tackling a ball carrier. Some guys like music and other don't and I don't care which one they choose. I also to tell them to not answer cell phones unless it is a parent calling to avoid additional distractions. Some guys like to be loose before a game so I have those guys move to a different area so they don't distract other guys. Each team is very different, my team last year was very loose but was great on game day, if they were too "tight" we didn't perform well. Understand "loose" is not screwing around, but they liked to talk to each other a lot while they got ready.

Great reply aztec! this is true Rush. not all your guys are going to be the same. yes you want your team to focus on the game, but you don't want to be the reason they stop focusing on it. i know that when i was playing, me and about 75% of the players liked to talk and relax and listen to music, and we didn't like doing any of that with coaches around. have confidence in your coaching ability. your guys know what to do, and they know how to do it. That's not what they're thinking about before game time, they're just trying to get relaxed, and everyone has a different way of doing that. just let them do it, but also let them know that on game day they can prepare how they want but they have to considerate of the other players. we use to use both locker rooms, the weight room, the gym, and some guys would even go to their cars in order to get ready, but when game time rolled around, you can bet we were ready. let me know how it all works out for you.
don't worry about what you don't know. if you had to know what you dont' know you would've learned it by now
