Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are going to play some teams with a very dangerous QB and TB (pitch man). We run a multiple 5 - 2, but are thinking about putting our noseguard (ex LB) at MLB and playing a 4-3. We are thinking about assigning the MLB, weak side OLB and 2 DTs to the dive, the DE and playside OLB to the QB, and the DBs to the pitch. What do you think. Our Nose / MLB is a stud. The outside veer is a little scary to me, but I haven't seen either team run it yet.
Any comments are appreciated.
In my opinion, the threat of the option is that the offense waits for you as a defense to make a mistake. Personally, I would take away the biggest threat of the two - QB or TB. If you can take both away, then you have them beat. If you can take one away, you are in good shape. In my 4-3, the N, DT, and MLB are responsible for dive. The DE has QB. If the OLB has a SS to his side, he will play QB to the TB. The SS will play the TB keeping outside leverage on him. If the option is being run away from the SS, the OLB has to know that he has to take the TB and trust that the FS will fill the alley if the QB turns up. I work with the OLBs and SS on reading the TBs first step. If he steps lateral, they are going now for their assignments. You can always switch it up by blitzing one of the OLBs and having him and the DE switch responsibilities. I hope this helps.

WOW...I just saw the post I made on this topic 21 months ago and I realized how much it was lacking! First of all, who is responsible for dive, QB and pitch is determined by which option scheme the offense is running at you. Secondly, option responsibilites are determined by what kind of defensive scheme you use and/or the games (stunts/blitzes) you use. Determining Option responsibilities must be part of your weekly gameplan.
The old Notre Dame "MIRROR" package is good vs all options. It can be run from a 4-3, 4-4, or 5-2 Eagle. If you wish to see it - email me at: billmountjoy@yahoo.com
Personally - I agree with Coach Campbell when he says: "If possible run a multiple 8 man front with inverts on both edges". This is what WE do from our 4-2-5.
PS:
A GOOD BOOK was written about the "Mirror" package by a High School Coach who is a friend of mine (Jack Dawson). He was also a close friends of the ND staff. He entitled the "Mirror" package as the "BACKBONE" defense (upon MY suggestion) because we used to have a saying: "DON'T WEAR YOUR WISHBONE WHERE YOUR BACKBONE OUGHT TO BE"!!!!!!!
