Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Could (but wouldn't NEED) to flip line on zones. For example - on the INSIDE ZONE, everybody blocks the same covered/uncovered rule, & uses the same technique.
Everybody is considered "playside" on the Inside Zone (there IS no "backside") because you don't know where the RB's reads will take him.
On the OUTSIDE ZONE - everybody STILL uses the same rules, but the technique on the backside is more of a wider cutoff (about 2 men over).
Yeah, the rules are the same and if you flip for personnel reasons (one side being better than the other) I think you would be giving the defense set tendencies. They would know where the ball is going more often than not.

I think you guys would be surprised with how much some teams in our area are willing to flip their strongest linemen to the side they are running. One team litterally runs behind the same guard and tackle over 90% of the time. You can read them like a book but they dont care because they can just out man most teams around here.
I agree that you don't have to flip linemen to run the zone, but I have spoken to coaches that like to flip their line for other reasons. Some, like Coach Nicholson points out, like to run behind the same guys all the time--often they put these guys on the "strong" side (with a TE)--easy to read, but you still have to stop it. Some actually like to put weaker linemen on the "strong" side, because the third blocker (TE) helps shore up that side, while they are confident that the 2 men on the "weak" side (without a TE) can generally do the job without the help of a TE (this also creates an extra gap for the defense to defend on the backside of a weak zone play -- I remember Boston College running quite a bit of this a few years ago and having a lot of success cutting back to the strong side). So, I guess my point would be that if you want to flip your line for other reasons, I'd go ahead and do it. Running the zone shouldn't really affect your decision.
