Any coaching points on defending wall return on punts? Our opponent this week runs a full wall return to the wide side of the field. They also have one of the best returners in the state so we will be attempting to kick the ball OB on every punt. If we don't get the ball OB, I want to make sure we don't get walled off. Thanks.
One coach in our conference said that someone actually used their wall return to block for him. the opposing punter recognized the wall being set up, and just took off, letting them block for him.
To defeat a wall return you need train your punting team to be able to recognize the wall as it forms. From film study you will know who forms their will and what their tendancy is-wall to wide/tight side, wall to own sideline, etc. You must train at least TWO members of your coverage team to get behind the wall beofre or as it is forming; one is your contain man-(every coverage team MUST have a contain man on each side). In a base Double Slot/Wing Punt the contain is the Slot/Wing to that side.
The rest of your coverage team must recognize and attck the wall OR if possible cut the returner off before he reaches the wall.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 11 GREAT TACKLERS ON THE PUNT TEAM, GUYS WHO LOVE TO SMACK PEOPLE IN THE MOUTH! HIGH SCHOOL KIDS TEND TO SLOW DOWN WHILE TRYING TO READ WHAT SIDE THE WALL IS BEING SET TO, ETC. AND THIS IS VERY COUNTERPRODUCTIVE! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CONTAIN MEN WHO WANT TO DO THERE JOB AND NOT FLY TO THE BALL! BUT, THE OTHER 8 SHOULD BE REAL HEAD HUNTERS WHO WANT TO GET TO THE BALL CARRIER AS EXPEDIENTLY AS POSSIBLE AND LAY HIM OUT!!!
THEY HAVE TO BE PHYSICAL ENOUGH TO BREAK THE WALL IN ORDER TO GET THE JOB DONE, STAY ON THEIR FEET AND MAKE A DRIVING TACKLE THAT WILL LOTS OF TIMES JAR THE BALL LOOSE!
