The first football game was played at Rutgers University in New Jersey in 1869. Rutgers memorabilia of games past include a stocking cap (circa 1880) that predates the leather helmet, gauntlet and pants (circa 1923), and an "R" jersey (circa 1892). The spikes on the shoes are made from wood wedges with small protruding nails. The football resting on the spikes dates back to 1939.
