Hey guys I am new to the site and new to coaching but I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on what position a coach who is just starting out should learn if he wants to move up in the coaching field. I played WR and DB in high school but I have been trying to study up on every position now that I am planning a career change into football coaching.
All of them. Keep learning about them all like you are. If possible, switch positions - actually coaching a position forces you to really learn it. Any coach, IMO, should know the OL. I was a DB/WR like you, and my knowledge quadrupled when I learned about what actually determines most games (the lines).
Generally speaking though, you need to know everything to really understand the game. If you want to be an offensive coach, you should thoroughly learn (or coach if possible) the defense to understand what they are trying to do and what puts pressure on them. Not sure if I helped. It's late. I better just go to bed.
I agree with CUI. Get every opportunity you can to coach all positions. I played OL in college, but when I was a GA I coached RB's in the fall and WR's in the spring. The next year I was hired full time and coached LB's for 2 years. The time spent on defense has made me a better offensive coach. If you want to be a coordinator you must learn all the positions. On offense it all starts up front. The line play is essential to know if you ever want to understand the run game and pass protections.
Good luck,

If you are really committed to coaching, coach the Offensive Line. Everything goes through them and you will want to know what they should be doing and how they should be doing it. Once you understand the line, QB, RB and WR will fall like meat from a bone. I'm not taking shots at other position coaches, it is simply the truth, unless they have coached (or fully understand) the offensive line, they do not fully understand the game of football.
Case in point. I am a HS Varsity Assistant and the OL coach. Because of a conflict, I can not coach JV or Frosh, the RB coach handles the JV and WR coach the Frosh. The first three weeks of game where simply chaos for them, they did not understand what was taking place up front, and I would bet they still don't. However, they have great lineman who know their responsibilities.
