Hi coaches,
i have read these forums for a few years now and added my comments were i felt i could help and now the time has come for me to post and ask your advice. If you wish to skip all of the details (as there are a lot) to my problem my question is in bold at the bottom of my post.
first i will give you some background on myself and the situation. my name is joe and i am currently completing my last year of a Sports development and PE degree at university in the UK. i have been playing football for 3 years now and have had relative success being selected to represent Great Britain several times. My coaching experience is limited to being a postional coach for one of my teams (that i also played for) and a local youth team.
in the UK football is a minority sport there is an adult league that runs in the summer with around 35 teams. only around 8-12 of the teams are of any mentionable standard and most are very poor teams with very poor coaching and organisation.
there is also a university league that runs the end of october through march with roughly the same number of teams but a lower standard of play and coaching. I must stress that the coaching is continuing with a combination of boards such as this and a good coach education program including speakers such as mike leach, dennis danielson and R.C. Slocum.
College teams gain rookies that have usually never watched a full game before let alone played in kit. teams will have to take them and make them (as ready as they can) to play a game in 4-5 weeks. players will stay for usually 3 years until they finish their degrees.
I am going to start a team at my university next year and although we will have 1 year as a team without being entered into the league we will have few experienced players when it comes to our first game. how would you approach the problem of educating these rookie players in football, bearing in mind that they will have just arrived at university for the first time and will be looking to have fun? It cant be too intense as they wont stay with the team. i intend to put together a staff of atleast 4 coaches (all unpaid) with varying experience and we will have 2 practices per week. We hope to have 25-40 players with good athletes playing both ways
Any help will be welcomed and if you require any further detail please dont hesitate to ask. I intend this to be an ongoing topic.
Joe
