Wanting to get ready for the upcoming 7 on 7 season, need some advice on how to start. I am fairly new to 7 on 7, I helped last year but I want to get more involved with helping the defensive side of the ball.

Why form DIFFERENT habits that may be hard to break. Cannot see ANY advantage to NOT repping your BASE!

Agree with ONEBACK. Anytime you are forced out of your BASE your putting your game outcome in jeopardy. There are times you have to change up, of course, but do not ever do it until you are ABSOLUTELY FORCED. 7 on 7 season is a great time to iron the kinks out of your BASE. WHY NOT SPEND YOUR TIME ON THAT INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BE INNOVATIVE WITH ALL THESE DEFENSES YOU SEE TO COMBAT THE WIERD OFFENSIVE SETS YOU ALWAYS SEE IN 7 ON 7 MATCHUPS? Just a suggestion as always.

In talking with our defensive coordinator, they run a lot of Cover 2 so we are probably looking that direction. I asked about sticking with the base defense and he agreed whole-heartedly. Thank you both for the advice. Coach also gave me some great information sheet on the different coverages as I a bit football illeteriate. Thanks again! Can't wait for 7-on-7 to start!

My thoughts are a little different. If we face teams in the regular season that run lots of 1 back or empty (as most teams do in 7 on 7) then we will probably be in a nickle or dime defense. So, we practice the coverages that we will run from our nickle and dime.. This gives us a fair chance to succeed at 7 on 7, and get ready when we face a spread team. Our base defense is an 8 man front, which we will not use a lot versus the spread.
