Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Anybody out there run this? Weis at ND runs these and it seems to give the defense all kinds of fits! Let me know how you run it and how you call it. Thanks
That play was run by the Redskins when they had Riggins at RB & Donny Warren (6'7/270) as the "WHAMMER" - in the 1980's. Panthers FEATURED it in the Super Bowl 2-3 years ago with Stephen Davis running the ball. Dan Henning took this play with him when he left the Skins. He & Weis worked together with the Jets. Henning now features the play as "OC" of the Panthers. It all goes around in cycles!!!
It is off the INSIDE ZONE - with the "whammer" trapping (outside/in) the Nose, or the DT if no Nose on Center. Playside ZONE blocks & from the others turn away, leaving EITHER the Nose, or DT, alone to be "whammed".
Here is a description of the play without diagrams: Example: Play call right with RB aiming for butt of RG & cutting behind the block of "H":
“40/50 LEAD NOSE”
A) VS 3-4
LT = TURN OUT ON W
LG = REACH M
CTR = TURNBACK ON E (LEFT)
RG & RT = ZONE S & E
Y = BASE B
H = “BANG MOTION” & TRAP N (MAN ON CENTER OR FIRST MAN ON LOS PAST CENTER) ND didn't use motion because they slotted him between the ON T & TE.
B) Vs 43 Over
LT = TURN OUT ON E
LG = TURN BACK ON W
C & RG = ZONE M & T (ON RT)
RT & Y = ZONE S & E
H = “BANG MOTION” & TRAP T (FIRST MAN ON LOS PAST CENTER). Once again - ND didn't need to motion.
Would you recommend using this against a 46 Bear defense (traditional look with 0 tech NG, 3 Tech DT's, 7 tech SS and 2 9 tech DE's with ILB's over the OT's)?
What is the timing and steps like in the backfield?
NO SIR!!!!! There are too many people in there, & there will be "TOO MANY ASSES IN THE HOLE"!!!
Run the COUNTER to the split end side from a "TE TRIPS" look, as they generally match up in Cover 1, & they will be a man short to the SE side. If (going to the SE side) you trap the DE, block down on the 3 tech, & lead thru on the MLB - your RB should "pop it" because there is NO secondary run force over there!!!!
I am talking about the Counter (which can be run from ANY oneback or two back set) where the RB takes a hard jab step AWAY from the point of attack & hits downhill off the butt of the playside Guard. He has a "trapper" (the Off G) & a "wrapper" (Off T OR Off H/Y) leading.
It was (& is) a Counter which begins with the first step of the Inside Zone one way & hits opposite. QB comes back to roughly 5 (ctr lt) or 7 (ctr rt) o'clock (like the Inside Zone) & hands to rB.
Just about EVERYBODY I see in College & Pro runs this!!!!! It is commonly referred to as "Counter-Trey" (which is little bit of a misnomer). Others refer to it as "Counter-Gap"!!!!!
Very difficult to give a CLEAR picture of a play in typing. If you want to know the details call me at 804-740-4479 (Virginia).
Bill, we ran this at Raines out of the "I" and wham action to me consists of pulling the backside guard as the wrapper, turning out the playside tackle, sending the FB as a lead blocker to wham the LB, and here comes the RB with the football, much like running the ice! What constitutes a wham action play to me is the help from the backside, agree or no?

Bill, totally understand it is two diferent plays. I installed the way you described last year early when you sent me the breakdown and it is very effective, to be sure. I still run my play also and now I have two good ones instead of one! Thanks!
