What is your "BASE" blocking scheme??

B. GUARDS BLOCK #1

E. #4 ACCOUNTED FOR SEVERAL WAYS.
F. NOTE: IF “0” IS NOT IN THE “CENTER BOX” – CENTER DESIGNATES “0” AS THE FIRST DEFENDER TO THE SIDE HE IS BLOCKING.
G. IN A STACK – THE DLM GETS THE LOW #.


2. TEACH “COVERED/UNCOVERED” (TO DETERMINES WHO ZONE BLOCKS
AND WHO MAN BLOCKS).

A. IF YOU ARE COVERED – ZONE WITH YOUR PLAYSIDE TEAMMATE.
B. IF YOU ARE COVERED – ZONE WITH YOUR BACKSIDE TEAMMATE (UNLESS HE IS COVERED THEN YOU MUST MAN BLOCK).
NOTE: IF YOUR MAN IS STACKED IN A “TANDEM” – ZONE WITH TEAMMATE WHOSE MAN IS ALSO STACKED.

3. BLOCKING CALLS (ONLY IF NECESSARY – “GRAY AREAS”)

4. TEACH LANDMARKS (AIMING POINTS) FOR COVERED AND UNCOVERED
BLOCKERS (IN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE ZONE).

5. TEACH THE 3 SITUATIONS THAN CAN OCCUR IN ZONE BLOCKING (DLM
GOES INSIDE, STRAIGHT AHEAD, OR OUTSIDE).


NOTE: TERMS OF IMPORTANCE:

A. COVERED = THE ALIGNMENT OF A DL HEAD-UP OR EITHER SHOULDER OF AN OL ON THE LOS.
B. UNCOVERED = THE SAME AS COVERED EXCEPT THE DEFENDER IS OFF THE L.O.S. BY ONE OR MORE YARDS. UNCOVERED ALSO INCLUDES A VOID (NO ONE IS ALIGNED IN FRONT OF AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN).

John - We only teach TWO RULES: #1: NUMBER rules I sent - which cover INSIDE ZONE; OUTSIDE ZONE; BASE PASS PROTECTION (REGULAR WITHOUT "BOB"), OR ANY PLAY WHICH REQUIRES BASE BLOCKING.

#2: The ONLY other rules are COUNTER/POWER, which are the same.

We DO ISO off Inside Zone to the side of the DT on the inside shoulder of the OG, OR shading the Center. We just tell everybody to use the zone blocking EXCEPT the ON G & Ctr. will STAY on the DT & the "H" isos the ILB (IF we didn't "iso" - either the ON G or Ctr. would have to come off on the ILB).

This way, we can run our base plays:

1. Inside Zone (with or without lead blocker)
2. Outside Zone
3. Counter
4. Power
5. Toss = a mixture of our two rules: H & Y block down like Counter; ON T pulls to lead (a "special block"), & everyone else blocks like OUTSIDE ZONE
6. Reverse off Inside Zone fake with base # rules.

That is ALL WE EVER RUN!

I am basically trying to decide if it would be best to either give the kids a combo rule like in pure zone blocking to use for our base plays or if it would be best to just stick with our base man rule and continue to emphasize the use of chip and scoop blocks. What do you think??

You NEED zone blocking. It is easier on your O-Line than man blocking, because in man blocking a DLM head up, you generally miss him IF he pinches inside!!!!! In ZONE blocking - you don't have to worry about a DLM pinching inside BECAUSE you have "ASS PROTECTION" from your inside uncovered teammate. This cuts downs on a TON of penetration, & gives you a better PUSH OFF THE BALL (2 men can push a stalled van better than 1!!!!!).

We just get to zone blocking simply by telling everybody to block their base man, & IF you are uncovered by a DLM - zone with your playside teammate. You can use blocking calls, or just call out the jersey number of the lineman.

I agree with oneback. With the Dlinemen taken care of in this way, negative yardage plays are few and far between.

Coach Nicholson, I would like to hear how you block your Iso's, Dives and Off-Tackle plays. Could you please explain this?

I typed this up earlier and it didnt go thru for some reason so I'll try it again.

Our base rule is: inside gap, man on, linebacker
we also emphasize chip blocks and scoop blocks which often result in combo's

Example of our ISO vs a 53 defense: C and PSG dbl team the NG...PST and TE block man on...BSG and T scoop toward the play and pick up any defender that crosses their face...FB of course ISO blocks on MLB

We have a couple different calls that will change up the blocking assignment for 1 or 2 players on our Off Tackle play. We will either dbl down and kick out with FB or base block it and have FB lead thru the hole onto OLB.
