Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are a no huddle, multiple formation offensive team. We have done a little with having our QB read D and call plays at the LOS. I was interested in finding out if anyone has a series of plays that they pair and what they teach the QB to read.
We run Gun Option and this about 90% of our run game.
#1 thing, QB always can check to bubble.
#2 start by teaching Coach Campbell's option on me when underneath. Once this is mastered we move to the gun...
#3 we pair 90% of our run plays. The first 2 that we pair in gun are inside veer and tackle trap by reading the outside inverts, just like Option On Me. Once we can do this we move to...
#4 Gun midline and Gun speed. If there is a 3 tech we run midline. If there is a 1,2i, or 2 we run speed option. The only other thing that we do is this...
#5 Pair gun FB trap and toss. Same DL reads as midline and speed. Just gives a different look, differne tblocking scheme and takes the read from the QB. These 2 look like option but are a straight handoff unless you get a Dart call.
Coach I would like to ask you some questions about your gun option game and how you run your midline out of the gun. If you could email me at jmullins@mcalester.k12.ok.us I would like to ask you some questions. Thanks Coach!!!
We have run midline from under center, but never from Gun. Is it blocked the same way? We block the playside G to the LB, playside T block the DE out and have the slot lead through for the QB who reads the 3 Tech to give or keep. The FB aiming point is the crack of the Center. Center blocks backside A gap to LB. Backside G blocks B gap to LB and Backside T blocks C gap player.
Pretty much blocked the same. We do not lead, pick up our slot receiver as a pitch down field. Aiming point of the FB is the backside leg of the Center. When we aimed for the crack of the center, we always ended up in the playside a gap. See almost all 4-4 defenses and only ran midline at 6 in the box. QB must really step up hard to the center on the snap of the ball. We will block midline like this occasionally...
playside guard short pulls and kicks out the DE, ot blocks down on playside ILB. This influence helps freeze the DT for a second which seems to help the timing when in gun.
This play was really hit or miss, our midline from underneath was very consistent 2 to 4 yds every time. Gun midline was plus 25 or -3. We probably only ran 2 or 3 times a game. We paired it with speed and the Qb wanted to run speed more often. He had to see a 4i before he ran midline and then the backside shade caused us problems. The most success was when he actually ran it to a 3. Mastering gun midline is our #1 off season priority.
Get the tapes for Coach Campbell's Option-on-me series. They are a great help, and if you don't have offensive linemen who can block (I don't), this is definitely the way to go, because you will option defenders instead of blocking them. I hope this helps.

Coach, the pleasure was all over here at this end of the computer. The amazing thing is that after all these years, I am still learning from you. The Read Play will be something that we will discuss over time. That's a play that you never showed us before. In addition, I grasp your concepts at an easier pace now. It just took me seven years to do it. There is a chance that I may see you in New York, but regardless, we'll be talking. I'll let you know what happens with the three interviews this week. Take care, Coach.
