Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Anyone see the offensive set they are using? They call it PISTOL with the QB at 4 yds and TB at 6-7 directly behind the QB. I watched them run dive, counter and zone. They also ran boot and faked the dive and did a half roll. Seem to move the ball pretty well. What are your thoughts on this set and how versatile is it? What other running plays can you see being run from this formation?
I did see only parts of the game, but this is very interesting to me as well. I have thought about doing something like this to avoid tendencies on which side of the QB the back lines up. would be curious to see how their footwork is done from the alignment though. The few plays I saw, it looked like the QB would kind of spin back to the RB with his back to the LOS. Is that what you saw?
The "pistol" offense has quarterback Jeff Rowe 4 yards behind the center (instead of the 6 in a normal "shotgun" formation), and running back B.J. Mitchell right behind him.
"(Ault) thinks he invented a new offense," Jones said. "But it's just a modified single-wing."
Ault likes it because it allows for passing and running. UH defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville doesn't like it because it comes in a variety of forms and spreads out his players.
"They stay in that pistol with three wides and one tight end and they'll always have just one back. Then they'll come and they'll have two tight ends, two wide receivers," he said.

Hey:
It looks like what Larry Beckish (trap-option fame) would call the east west formation. He could run most of his Wichita State trapoption out of it.
Thefootballbooklist website used to have an article about it. The sight isn't up now, but this was posted on the gun option list also and I posted a flag to the guys that used to run that site. They post here a good bit.
