Am curious as to what some of you do with your multi-sport athletes during the off-season relating to the athletic period. How do you handle your varsity and sub-varsity basketball players, for instance. If a football player is a key baseball player, do you consider moving him to the baseball athletic period..especially if that is the sport that is the athlete's first priority.
at our school, our head football coach can hire every coach in the school but the basketball coaches. And they do not coach football. both of our baseball coaches are football coaches and they understand the importance of the weight room. the basketball program has a strangle hold on our community and the higher ups are not going to do the right things in order not to make political suicide. with that in mind: our football/ baseball, soccer, track, tennis players stay in football pe. they lift everyday unless it is a game day or they are injured. we also adust the pitchers workouts to allievate some stress on their pitching arms. we have to let our football/ basketball players go to basketball pe, that is the only time they practice. so they do not get to lift until their season is over. and then we just move them to 7th hour Freshman football pe ( which is the same time as basketball pe ). i have been at some schools that spring sports practice after school, so the football players who play other sports can lift during school and not miss out. which is what i believe to be the best way of doing.
