I am the VP of a youth football organization in Wisconsin. We have kids 5th-8th grade. Our actual function is the obvious as well as work with the two high schools in town to teach terminology and proper O & D according to the future schools the kids will be attending
Our basic philosophy has been to split as much playing time as possible at all levels and continue to build strong 1-9 HS teams. Our football program has become a liberal make every one feel good about themselves operation of which I would like to turn around immediately.
My belief is to split playing time at the 5th and 6th grade levels, play all at the 7th but the perponderance of playing time going to the kids that show the effort and attitude M-F.
At the eighth grade I feel we should get the kids in but that we should also strive to win a league championship. Once a team has lost 2 games they are essentially eliminated from any chance of a championship so at that time we would work to play as many as often and stay at or above 500.
I would like to know what HS coaches out there thought our mission should be as well as any comments from other leagues out there that have found a sound balance of both.
We are molding young kids and I believe teaching them, that preperation and hard work are unimportant because regarless of what you put in you will still gain playing time. This is not a lesson that works well in my own personal and professional life. I believe we should be teaching the kids at the higher levels 7th and 8th, they have to work hard to reach goals on the field and in life.
Some one pls provide the ultimate wisdom,
thanks,
