Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
For those of you that run the backside de read at the high school level, I'm wondering if it's a part of every run play (with the exception of qb iso's, speed opt, etc.)?
Or do you make the mesh a predetermined give and have your "eyes in the sky" watch the bsde to call for a qb keep later in the series?
I guess the long and the short of it is, at the high school level is the massive amount of time it takes to rep out the mesh read, in your opinion, more beneficial than reps spent running other plays and accounting for crashing ends via your spotters? Or is less actually more?
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

To do it right, you need to read it every time. If you don't it is going to eliminate a major part of your offense. By not reading him, you are giving him a chance to make the play which to me, puts your offense in a hole.
As the coach of a youth team (10-12) we have always utilized a backside read in our gun run game except when our QB is carrying the football. It does not take an inordinate amount of reps even at our level before our kids at QB are comfortable with the read and knowing when to pull the ball. It has been extremely effective for us, because of the aggressiveness of many kids playing DE, especially at the youth level.

If you want to simplify the read, have QB open up and point the ball at DE. If DE crosses the ball - PULL. If DE does not cross the ball - GIVE. This gives the QB a landmark so to speak that might make it easier. Only thing you lose is the ride - which obviously can cause problems anyway.

Is this the "point" method a lot of the under center option guys talk about?
We run option under center and use the point method, zero fumbles in our backfield with no confusion at all.. With the step and point, your QB will move towards his read and point the ball out to the hand off position, if he reads a move to the hole he will pull it back and the FB will proceed without the ball, if it is still there when the FB gets there he will take it and run... The only thing you need to work on is to make sure your FB is comfortable with running his line regardless of where the QB is, it will save hours of mesh practice, improve ball retention and speed up your play whether you hand off or keep.
There is a very good explanation of the step and point in the installing under center, if I remember. I contacted the coach talking about it and will never mesh again, same result with absolutly no chance of dropping the ball. I also like not having to spend the first two weeks of the preseason working on the mesh and ride,
Just teach your QB to take the same 6 o'clock step every time and then an aggressive step directly at the first read, point the ball and move on down the line, This will also improve your counter plays and diguise other plays you may run since your QB will take the same steps and motion on every play,
