In 1882 Walter Camp persuades the Football rules committee to adopt a system of downs. If a team could gain 5 yards in three downs it could keep the ball. It was in 1882 also that Walter Camp suggested laying out the field in 5 yard chalk lines, thus giving it the appearance of a gridiron.
