I was wondering what your thoughts/actions are in regards of telling kids about supplements such as protein powder, amino acids, creatine or any other minor, legal, beneficial supplements. When I was in HS, our coaches did not need to make us aware of them...we already knew about them and we would take creatine (this was during that creatine boom era) and protein powder/meal replacements on our own. However, seeing what these kids eat and how they replenish their bodies after workouts (if any), it is very alarming to me. I am a big believer in supplements, I lived on them in HS and in College. But our HC does not want us promoting anything to the kids. I would like to hear your thoughts on this and get an idea of what could be or should be done. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Coach,
I am not a big fan in some of the supplements available today. I do not mind the idea of players using protein bars, powders, drinks, etc...however, I do not think teenagers should go near other chemically enhanced supplements. For the most part, teenagers do not understand what are in these supplements and, even more so, do not understand what they are doing to their body. They easiest source of this info is the person selling the supplements to them and they may not even know for sure, besides, they want to make the sale.
My advice would be to talk with a doctor or your sports trainers who know more about these supplements and what they do.
I appreciate your reply and see where you are coming from. Personally, if the kids actually took a protein shake after workouts and consumed a protein bar during the day, that would be a TREMENDOUS improvement. There is so much crap on the market nowadays, and who knows what they could be getting into. But what side of the fence is straight creatine? Not Cell-Tech or chemically enhanced products that contain creatine, but 100% pure creatine. It is a natural amino acid and produced by the body. I know what our sports trainers are going to say...much like a GNC worker who only wants to make the sale, the sports trianers want to save their butt's by all means and the easiest route is to denounce the product. I have done a good amount of positive research (sport and medicine journals)about creatine and understand it, along with being aware of having the responsibility of educating and monitoring the whole process...
Coaches,
Let me ask this question, how many coaches out there have educated their kids on protein powders, meal replacements, vitamins and pure creatine? How many coaches can say that they have kids who are open about taking it without educating them on it? I guess I just want to see if I am living in my very tiny world of experience (HS team that took supplements and the college road). Keep up the great work fellas!
