I wanted to get some opinions out there…
We just switched from Wing-T to 1-Back Zone this year and I wanted to see how many plays some of you guys have in your run offense. My thoughts are that we currently have too much in ours. We all have limited time and I think that because we have so much in our run game, that we can’t spend as much time as we need on our IZ/OZ zone blocking because we have to rep everything else. We did well this year with the playbook we had (8-2) but I think we may be able to get rid of some plays. I’ve spoken with Coach Mountjoy about this and got his opinion and was wondering what some of the other 1-Back Zone teams out there were doing before I meet with HC to give him my opinion for next year. We have a very good RB and a 5’8 QB who has a descent arm but very fast feet and can run the ball very well (he’s a RB converted into a QB) and this will be taken into account as we plan for next year so that we can fully utilize the kids we have.
This year we were able to and did run the following plays (effectively at times, some more so than others):
1. Dive
2. Dive Option
3. FB Trap (and QB Trap off same blocking)
4. Speed Option
5. ISO
6. Power
7. Inside Zone
8. Counter (and QB Counter off same blocking)
9. Outside Zone
10. Toss
11. Toss Trap
This doesn’t include our Naked off the OZ, Play Action and Drop Back (10 route packages), and Screens (x3)
How does this measure up with what some of you guys do in your 1-Back Zone offense? I appreciate your opinion/advice and will use it when I meet with my HC next week. Thanks a lot.
