Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
My question is how do you block the 3 tech when the backside guard is pulling, such as on Power or Counter. I've always said the best thing about veer blocking (option) is that the Center can block to the playside A gap and help with a blitzing LB or with a slanting 3 tech. This way the Guard can block the 3 tech and get help from the tackle that combo's up to the LB. This is a great way to block the 3.
However my question is when the backside Guard pulls, such as on Power or Counter, and the center has to block back for him (or does he?) how do you block the 3 then. Do you let the Guard go to the Backer and have the Tackle drive him down? What if the Backer scrapes hard? Guard will not touch him. Tackle will also have a hard job stopping penetration like that. Do you have the Guard base the 3 and the Tackle combo up to the Backer like in Veer? What is the Backer plugs A gap hard? Tackle will not touch him.
I'm looking for all ways to get the 3 tech and the Inside LB blocked on power or counter where you are pulling the backside guard. Thanks in advance to all who reply.
Coach,
Whenever I have a guard pulling across the formation and he has a 3 tech lined up over him, I tell my center he is responsible for anything from his midline to the pulling guards far shoulder. At the same time, my tackle is scooping anything from the guards shoulder to the outside LB. A good thought is to reduce the splits of the guard making it easier for the center to cover for him, however, if the center simply cannot make the block, widen the split (move the defender away) and ask the tackle to pick up the 3 tech. and the center to block his midline to backer.
Joboo 59, thanks for the response. I'm mostly interested on how to block the 3 tech with the Guard/Tackle on the play side, not the side the pulling guard is coming from. We use a rule like you said, cheat the trapper tighter to the center so he is closer to the trap and the center's back block is easier. I agree with that.
However I'm specifically looking at the 3 on the other side. We are not trapping the 3 in this case. We are having to combo up to the LB off of the 3 with the playside Guard and Tackle. I'm asking how do you teach that block. Thanks.
I'm not sure I know what you're asking. The guard and tackle (PS) track the playside LB while comboing the 3. If the LB comes inside, the G takes him. If he fills the C gap, the T takes him. If that what you mean
Yeah, that is exactly what I mean. I'm really asking how you teach that double team block between the Guard and Tackle on the playside. It looks like a zone block technique. For instance, you said if the LB comes inside the Guard has him, if he scrapes outside the Tackle has him. I'm just trying to get a feel of how you teach that tandem block.
What I was trying to say was in veer blocking we never worry the guard blocking the three. He has him, period. He will get help on both sides from the Center and the Tackle. We will triple team him and scrape to the backer. We have three players to block two defenders, that is good. But if the Center has to block back for the trapping guard then you have two Offensive Linemen to block two defenders. Now the LB either filling or scraping causes a problem. Either the Guard has to come off or the Tackle has to come off the double team and take him. How do you teach, maybe I should say REP this block. Thanks
Our line coaches rep this a lot, especially since most of our running plays utilize this "you two block those two" strategy. Simply line a D Lineman up over one of 2 adjacent blockers and put a LB behind the D lineman. The coach usually tells the LB where to go, and sometimes even when. (The coach is standing behind the OL so the defense can see him.) We will pair Centers with Guards and OTs with TEs, and also have a day where Guards are with OTs.
The linemen make a "me, me, me" call or "you, you, you" call during the play to communicate who is going to work off to the LB. Does that make sense?
The OT CUTS him (backside 3 tech. to side OG pulls from)!!!!! That is how the STEELERS teach it (RUSS GRIMM) & NOBODY in the NFL runs it better:
Article in Jan 13, 2006 "SPORTING NEWS" magazine:
NFL: The Power O
It's all about attitude
During Joe Gibbs' first tenure in Washington, when the Redskins led late, guard Russ Grimm would exclaim on the sideline, "It's time for the tanks!"
The tanks were two and sometimes three tight ends to supplement "The Hogs" in a bruising running game. Gibbs would mix 40-50 gut, a straight-ahead power play, with counter trey, and more often than not, the Redskins ran to victory. Now Grimm is an assistant in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers employ Power O, an off-tackle running play some of the league's other better ground teams -- Chicago, Seattle and Tampa Bay -- also use.
The weakside guard pulls, and follows the fullback who is responsible for blocking the outside defender. The tight end blocks down on the end, and the tackle and play-side guard work a combination block to the second level. With a counter step by the back, the linebackers can be sucked in, creating a natural bounce to take the play outside. It's a play Green Bay used with Ahman Green -- and the reason the Packers are struggling without guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle.
"Power O is an attitude play," Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner says. "Let's double-team 'em and ram the ball up in there."

we used to double the 3 to the playside with the tackle and the guard. it was an automatic double for the guard. he would attack the inside shoulder while the tackle would block down to seal the deal. this worked except for a solid front where everyone is man-on. TE to end, OT to DT, and G checking inside then going to the second level. but yes, double teaming the 3 to the LB is the way to go.
don't worry about what you don't know. if you had to know what you dont' know you would've learned it by now
That is correct - (double the playside 3 UNLESS the Center is covered). If I'm not mistaken, I think his original question was how to handle a penetrating 3 to the side the OGG G pulls FROM! You have to cut him with the BS/OT.
