Coaches,

I have a question that was generated on a clinic tape and I may have discussed it in another thread (just not in depth) but I would love to get your opinion.

What do you think about having indy period after Team period. I have never participated in such a format but it makes sense to me. There have been many times that you work on tech/fundy's in indy period, go to team and then see other things that need fine tuning and then BAM, end of practice. How nice would it be to go through Team, asses what needs to be done, and when in the moment, go over what needs to be worked on. I would have sometype of county fair period (tackling, footwork, fumble drills) before hand to get the ball going for Team. Love to hear your comments on this!

I have never done this in practice either but it does sound interesting and I can defenitly see some advantages that might come from this. If I chose to try Team before Indy during the regular season I would have 1 day when I ran Indy before team and then 1 day for Team before Indy. Switch it up and see which works best for you.

Also, I am big on high-tempo practices but it might be a good idea to tone down the pace in Team if you want to get everything out of your players during an Indy period that follows team. No sense in draining your kids in Team and then expecting to correct things in drills b/c it just wont happen.

I see your point there...maybe a walk through (cool down pace) of technique progressions/reads. The biggest thing I found in this past year was breakdown in technique and reads/reactions. But these breakdowns depended on the kid himself. I see it as a good time to take 15 minutes and work with each kid on what needs to be polished. Potentially, I like the idea of switching it on and off. A good little change up.

Education is about teaching in a progression. You start off with 1-on-1 fundamentals to make sure EVERY athlete understands his responsibility. Then you work as a group by having everyone in the group work on his assignment together. Finally, you bring the team together to work on the assignment as a team, which is an evaluation time for all involved.

You cannot expect an athlete to execute something when it does not get practiced until after the fact.

If you are teaching a class you don't give a test and then teach the content. I'm not going to give my class a test on pronoun problems and after the test teach the athletes what pronoun problems are.

This wouldn't be something that starts on day 1 and ends on the final day. Of course I would want to teach my individual period (fundy's, reads, ect) early in the pre-season...this is something that may be implemented one day a week. The HC could even provide "flex time" at the end of Team. If problems need to be indivudally addressed, we can get together (position coaches) for the final 10-12 minutes. If practice is going great and the tempo working on all cylinders, you can just keep going for those last 10-12 mins.

IMO, tests are final evaluations, and final evaluations IMO, are game days. This process would be more like teaching content, giving a practice test, then going over the problems, to fine tune for the big day.

during the season we may have a specific team period to start practcie. these are usually very specific periods and usually don't start until we have been working out for a while. may start tuesday with a 5 minute team screen period. then go into ind, group, team -- "normal" practice. or, we might start with a 5 minute no-huddle script against air - move the ball & score, very up tempo before getting into the normal practice routine.

the up-tempo period is used to jump start an uptempo practice.

I completely understand the process of teaching. At the same time I think running a TEAM period prior to INDY would be a good change of pace once in a while.

To me, that would defeat the purpose of having a well planned out, well scheduled practice. I agree totally with Lou Cella in that the very intent and purpose of individual periods being scheduled prior to team periods is to acquaint the players with exactly what they will be running during the team period. I break my practices down into segments from 5 minutes to 20 minutes, have printed practice plans for each assistant coach that I hand out prior to practice in order to make them conizant of what I want covered in their individual periods. This is done so that they may prepare an intelligent individual period plan that will have the players very aware of the pitfalls to expect in team, and to prevent them!

Unlike a lot of coaches, I combat the errors that occur in first team period by having a second set of individual and team periods. These consist of attacking the MAJOR PROBLEMS that occured in the first team period in the second individual period and then try to put it together correctly in the second team period. Time constraints make it necesary for the second set of periods to be cut much shorter than the first set, but you still must allow ample time to cover the problems(major ones). Just my way and a suggestion as always.

we begin many practices with a TEAM TIMING session. This is an offensive sessoin against no defense or against a few coaches holding a dummy. for example, "midline on me" will be ran vs a 1 and 3 tech (coaches holding pads) simply to concentrate on breaking the huddle, hustling to the LOS, first steps, firing off low, QB recognition of techniqus if running midline, team timing, mesh, etc. During this drill we have a second and third team. They immediatley run the same play as the first group did. after excecuting the play, they sprint 30 yds and run the opposite play back to me. This is a 10-15 minute session. early in the season, this gets a lot of younger and inexperienced guys experience. Because we do not do this vs a real D, you are not going to see physical mistakes - only mental mistakes.

Immediately following - break up to INDY period - then group - INDY again - then team. In our group sessions, there are opportunities to see physical and mistakes that need to be addressed. Many mistakes can be noted and corrected in the INDY time that follows.

TYPICAL DAY ON OFFENSE (OL schedule)

Pre-Practice (10-15 minutes) usually just a SR lineman leading the guys through bags, first steps, etc.

Indy - Run blocking fundamentals / Running Game assignments
