Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have not ran it for a whole game, but I am thinking about doing this in my up coming season. What do you think are the pros and cons to running this style of offense? I Coach high school kids, so one of my issues might be the focus it take from the whole group to run that type of offense.
"Building a legacy through the foundation of family."
My conception of the no huddle has always been to keep the other team from substituting properly,
to catch the defense in bad alignments, to beat the team by wearing them out!
If you plan on putting the ball in play within 8 seconds of the spotting, YOUR KIDS HAD BETTER BE IN GREAT CONDITION IF YOU PLAN TO RUN IT THAT WAY ALL NIGHT.
We go no huddle for our 3 x 2 spread for 2 minute drill and for hurry up situations.
We have a scripted 5 play package for such situations and the QB just yells out a number of 1 thru 5
as the team is hustling back to the LOS! If I see something I want, I just yell or waggle it to the QB within the framework of the 5 number system if I hear him call another number. He just yells, "check-check" and then yells the number I want run. Very simple and very effective.

just saw a coach from Rice speak @ Chicago clinic (formerly at Tulsa and W. Va) about the no huddle and its affect on HIS PLAY CALLING.
He said he played against Maryland when he was at W. Va w/ Rich Rodriguez and what caused him trouble was the CONSTANT CHANGE OF PACE. They would no huddle sometimes and not others, so as the D Coordinator he didn't know if/when he could change personnel or take time sending in a defensive call. He had very high praise for Marylands O Coordinator because of how well he kept W.Va defense off balance. Something to think about. If I as a dCoordinator know I have time call plays I probably call in a different way than if I'm pressed for time to communicate.
Because of this he has a system to communicate w/ his players that is very interesting
The OC at Maryland is Charlie Taffee. He was reponsible in large part for building the bone at Army in the early 80's and went on to become the Head Coach at The Citadel. My son was their #1 recruit in the Spring of 1988 as a QB. Charlie is really a good guy and a most knowledgeable Football coach. He overcame some personal difficulties with John Barleycorn after losing his job at The Citadel because of it and went on to work with Ralph Pridgen at Maryland where he seems to be settled in now. He has been in my living room at 1:00 AM when recruiting my son and talking football a mile a minute! I would have loved to have had my son play for him, but he decided on going to Clemson instead. I attended a clinic at the Citadel and really enjoyed his, and his staffs, overall philosophy.

Dear Tiger:
Yes, I knew I had a reason to be angry with you. I just know figured it out. (LOL)

PS: Yes, Coach Taaffe's fall from grace was alot of heartache for all concerned. The program at El Cid has never recovered. We went from dogs to DAWGS (1-AA quarterfinals) to dogs all within 3 or 4 years. We have had some good men as coach since, but either they were getting near the end of their careers or were offered really good assistant jobs a Div 1 or NFL. Charlie really seemed to understand how to work with Cadets and squeeze great work out of them. For one, he realized how hard it was to recruit a great passer/QB to a military school even if they didn't have to go into the service afterwards. OH! Did you notice my classmate Lance Thompson is O'Leary's DC at Central FL.
All things work for the good to those who love Him.
You do not always have to go so quickly with the no huddle. If all you use it for is a hurry up, then you do want to go as quickly as possible. If not, vary the tempo of your hurry up. It appears the everyone you are going fast but in reality you may be taking as much time as if you huddle. Changing the tempo during the series could put added stress on the defense. In this way you can catch the defense trying to change personnel or catching them without being set. Like TIGER ONE said, your kids have to be in great shape.
WAS LANCE THOMPSON THE KID THAT GOT ALL THE PUB ABOUT GOING TO THE NFL FROM THE CITADEL,
THE ONE SPORTS ILLUSTRATED CALLED " THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE" ? IF SO, HE WAS A GREAT PLAYER. NO, I DID NOT KNOW HE WAS WITH GEORGE AT CENTRAL FLORIDA. WHAT POSITION DID YOU PLAY? AL SEMONSEN WAS THE LB'S COACH AND HE AND CHARLIE RECRUITED MY SON. IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, AL WENT TO MARYLAND WITH CHARLIE, DID HE NOT? I REALLY LIKED AL, HE WAS A GOOD MAN. THEY HAD A GREAT LINE COACH AT THE CITADEL, HIS NAME ESCAPES ME AT THE MOMENT, A BIG ITALIAN GUY. THE RECEIVER COACH THAT WAS THERE AT THE TIME, ENDED UP GOING TO CLEMSON WHEN MY SON LANCE WAS THERE. HIS NAME WAS RICHARD SOMETHING, WORE HIS SOCKS PULLED UP TIGHT INSTEAD OF WITH A LITTLE SAG IN THEM AS MOST OF US DO. HE WAS A GOOD RECEIVERS COACH! SPENT TIME WITH CHARLIE IN THE FILM ROOM TALKING AND WATCHING HIS OPTION GAME ON OCCASION AND ALWAYS ENJOYED PICKING HIS BRAIN.

Tiger One,
I have never seen a coach give as much praise to another coach as the guy did for coach Taffee.
I'll have to start paying a little more attention to Maryland FB.
