IM HAVING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME TEACHING MY LINEMEN TO USE THEIR HANDS. tHEY HAVE DEVOLOPED A HABBIT OF LEANING ON THE OFFFENSIVE PLAYER. THEIR ARE ALSO NOT MAKING CONTACT WITH THE GUARD WHEN HE STEPS DOWN TO BLOCK THE BACKER. ANY BODY HAVE IDEAS OF WHAT I SHOULD DO TO IMPROVE THIS.

;)Sorry about my previous non-message.Your players are probably leaning on their oppents because they are trying to add more weight to control him. An easier way to control any opponent is to CONTROL THE HUMEROUS BONE! This is the upper arm bone and properly manipulating it will lock the ENTIRE SKELETON. Once that is accomplished, the opposing player can be led in ANY DIRECTION.For example;if an O-lineman punches and/or grabs with his right hand,a common response is to re-direct the arm by pushing it away at the hand/forearm.Even if successful, a good O-lineman will retract (reload) his arm and punch or grab with it again. By contacting and controlling the humerous bone(I call this hook-lock-lead),your player could lead the O-lineman downfield and then atack the ball carier or force the elbow back into the O-guy's opposite hip which would severly hamper his ability to get your backer. For a more visual and complete demonstration I would suggest viewing the DEVELOPING MARTIAL ARTS GRAPPLING SKILLS FOR DEFENSIVE LINEMAN videotape that is available from this website.
We work on hand and arm drills EVERYDAY in our pass rush sequence.
Drill 1: vs. 2 pop-up dummies. 2 lines of DL line up in 2 pt stance ( i do this because i want them to concentrate on using their hands and arms only). I say 'ready', they chop their feet in a low FB stance, and on "go", they will club/rip to one side and then the other on the next rep. We will also swim vs the dummy as well. i will then remove the dummies and use a hand shield. vs. the handshield, they will swat the hands and rush up field. they will also rip through the shield and rush up field.
(sidenote, i often have kids put their hands out and then i swat them - they say, "man that hurts". and i tell them their hands are powerful weapons!!!!!!!) then they smile and understand.
Drill 2: Same drill out of their DL stance.
*We can obviously simulate any other pass rush technique in this drill period! Sometimes, especially early in year, some guys will 'walk' through these drills, visualizing and perfecting what it is we are aiming to accomplish. Sometimes getting hand or arm movements associated with the correct footwork is a job in itself.
Drill 3: Live pass rush vs. OL.
The toughest challenge I have is not teaching the skill or having the players perfect the skill - it is them and their ability to apply it on gameday. Some do and some just want to lean on their blockers.
