I am in need of some advice. Our head coach just resigned in December. I was his Defensive Coordinator.
We didn't see eye to eye very much but i knew my position on the staff and there could only be one chief. We never hashed out our differences in front of the players or anything like that. i have applied for the job and feel pretty good about getting it.
The former HC completely stepped back and now I am handling all AD and HC duties during this post season time (scheduling, weight lifting, speed training, etc.). I have recently talked to one of our top offensive linemen from last year and he was excited about me wanting to submit his name for the states all-star game, so I asked him for his copy of his recruiting tape. The former HC talked him out of it saying there is less than a one percent chance of him getting picked. While this maybe true (because of politics), this guy can definetly play D-2/3 college ball and I am just trying to get his name out there and let some other coaches see him on film (we are a small high school and we have to fight to get our kids any press).
I am just getting the feeling that the former HC made his decision to resign in haste and does not really want to give up his HC duties (possible pressure from home to resign. just a guess). Anyway, i don't need my first coaching job to be a battle between me and the former HC (did i mention that he is staying on staff to teach at the high school. could be a BIG PROBLEM). I need the loyalty of the players to reside with me 100%, especially since this season is looking like a rebuilding year. I just want to head this thing off before he sabotages my chance to prove myself as a descent HC. I have tried to talk to him but he is very negative and one of those that thinks everyone is out to get him (why, I have no idea). ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
thanks to all,
