I am looking for suggestions on playing the double slot (queens) and trips formations. We are a slant-52 with a rotational cover 3 secondary. We have previously displaced a LB from the box, but that has left us vunerable to inside runs. Any suggestions?
Play Cover 2 to the trips side and lock up away from trips. If you have kids that can cover man-to-man, lock up against the double slot. If not, play cover 2 vs. the double slot. If they run a lot of four verticals, do not be afraid to play cover 4 with three under or cover 8 (4 deep, 4 under). I've run the 3-4 (same as 5-2) for many years, I have been through all these formations before, I have succeeded against these formations before, and I look forward to helping you, if asked to do so.

We have locked up on the backside and played cover 2 on the trips side like Lou with success.
I like to play man whenever possible, but when I can't, especially when I'm worried about the run, we play some kind of cover 2 and find a way to get 9 in the box if at all possible.
I am not sure if I am thinking what you already said Lou, but what do you think about facing double twins formations where you could see some speed option, and you can't play man for whatever reason. Do you always have the corner play the flat and the S deep half? Last year we switched up the responsibilities with pretty good success, but it leaves you very vulerable deep. We actually funneled #2 outside to the deep half corner. It is pretty scary vs the pass, but I really liked it vs the run. We could easily man up as a change when I felt we were getting manhandled, but I was wondering if there was a better way to run the C2?
If we play a double slot team that will be successful running speed option we will run cover 2 with our two safeties on the hashes covering each half of the field. Our corners will play outside leverage of #1, funnel #1 inside, and then cover the flat. Our outside linebackers will align with leverage on #2 and cover the curl zone. Our Strong Inside Linebacker (Mac) will run up the seam. Our weak inside linebacker (Mike) will blitz and our front three will rush. Our defensive ends play outside leverage of the tackle if the outside linebacker walks away. They have contain responsibility. I would imagine that most teams would option the defensive ends and block everyone else. They won't have good luck with that as we will train our end to KILL THE QUARTERBACK, and our three perimeter people (OLB, Safety, and CB) have the pitch. That is how we will play cover 2 out of a 3-4 vs. double slot against a team who runs speed option.

Don't forget also you can play 2 by showing 4 and vice versa. We are a Rotating coverage team as well and play a spread gun team that runs the option and the zone read. We got away with playing a lot of 2 but rushing 5 and dropping 4 underneath. We would initially engage the inside recievers with our OLBs to give the ILBs time to get to the curl. The OLB then had the opportunity to rush from the edge and force a quicker thow. Our Corners would spin down late and funnel the outside reciever inside keeping their belly button inside and covering the flat. The only problem with this is if they run a lot of digs or deep in cuts, but this team really seemed to want to attack the curl and the deep corner. We also played our normal Strong/Weak Cover 3 by spinning either safety through the curl to the flat and dropping our backside OLB to the opposite Flat. We also mixed in our double robber (spinning both safeties and playing 2 over top) against downs they tended to run option or zone. We held this team to 121 yards of total offense but lost close in the 4th quarter. They were averaging 400+ yards a game and 37 points per game.
I know this is an old thread, but the subject of defending the 2x2 spread from a 5-2/3-4 has come up again.
Regarding your C2: do you teach your OLBs( on the #2s) to stay with them if they go vertical? Does your MAC who cover the seam (I'm assuming middle hook) drop deep with any verticals (Kinda like a Tampa 2 Mike)? Seems this C2 would be vulnerable to a quick slant or skinny post by #2. Am I wrong?
I know you can go C4 but I'm looking of rcoaching point for when your in C3 against this formation.
As well, have you ever kept you Will(WOLB) in to rush and walked out your Mkie (WILB) on coverage to end up with a 4-1 from. This would keep the better rusher (Will) in for what he does best. Any coaching points/ thoughts on this as well?
