Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
bluto, we actually took a 4/4 and bastardized it a bit to run more like a 2/5, we love it and only give up about three f/downs a week, gave up two long passes though, that's the down fall. I have some stuff here I will find the original info and get back to you on it if your interested.
We are a 4-4 (wide tackle6) by alignment, but are kinda' 4-2-5 by personnel. Our SE side OLB is really a
SS-type player, while our TE-side OLB is more of a 4-3 SAM-type player. When we get into our 4-3 package (vs one-back), we do not have to substitute; the SE-side OLB becomes the deep 1/2 or deep 1/4 player to the SE side. The OLB to the TE side is always a curl/flat player; never has to worry about anything deep. Our two inside LB's are typical LB's.
Having the ability to make this adjustment has really helped us. Before we did this, offenses could tell what we were doing by the alignment of the FS. They could also force us into/out of things by formation. Now we can align in a 4-3 vs a one-back formation and either play some kind of 4-deep coverage or do the same things we would do out of our 8-man front.
Have run a DALLAS 42 (4-2-5) since 1988. I'll be the first to tell you, our terminology is a bit different than most, in that I call our TWIN SS's just that, not OSLB's. By virtue of this, we are in a nickel at all times. When we go to a dime, we pull a LB in favor of a true DB type, as most due.
My reason for posting today on this topic is to say that unless you really have TWO GOOD SS'S THAT ALIGN AT 3 YDS DEEP AND 5 YDS WIDE OF THE EMOLS, your really not going to have good success with a 4-2 5. You call them LB's, We call them TIGER BACKS, have to be the two best athletes on the defense! Usually, in a more conventional D, the CB's are alluded to as the best athletes or the FS, but in my 4-2-5 the safties have 3 assignments on every play. (Tiger backs, not the FS) Number one, THEY HAVE CONTAIN ON THE SWEEP WHICH ALLOWS OUR CORNERS TO PLAY PASS THE ENTIRE DURATION OF THE PLAY, WHICH IS THERE JOB! IF THEY GET RUN OFF, SO WHAT? IT DOES NOT HURT US A BIT AS WE HAVE THE TIGERBACKS SETTING IN THERE TO STOP THE RUN! #2- THEY HAVE PITCH ON THE OPTION!
#3- THEY HAVE FLATS ON THE PASS! Those assignments to be completed correctly and successfully, TAKES A REAL FOOTBALL PLAYER TO ACCOMPLISH! He has to be able to really bring the funk on run support! He has to be able to run with TE's, Backs out, and really be able to scrape and drop equally as well! Do you find this to be the case with your guys?

I'm sorry I don't. I built my defense from scratch with the exception of the formation. I may have a game plan or something I can get my hands on, but I now live in South Carolina and my archives are in storage in Florida. If you would care to invest in a phone call, just call me anytime from 10Am until 10PM
and I can tell you a whole lot quicker the answers to any questions you may have than typing them out!

Coach Easton,
Thanks for the help with my defense last year. As you know I get the "privilege" of coordinating both sides of the ball. So I needed a defense that was multiple and also simple, as we are only in our 2nd yaer of football. I put in the 4-2-5, it worked great. Because I was short on time to coach my LB (also fullbacks) I didn't go with our Dallas 4-2-5 look, but made it more of a old 6-2 look with the LB in the B gaps. Their job was not to let anything happen in their B gap.
The key was, as you say, put my best kids on the outside S/S positions. I named them Dogs, so I had Ldog and Rdog. I used your simple (but difficult) formula about the 3 things they have to do.
Coach, I worked great, sorry it's taken me this long to get back with you about this.
Also, coach, what the 4-2-5 allowed me to do was to double outside receivers on passing downs. It also was simple to cover slot, doubles, and trips.
Something also, we would let our backside Dog go to QB alot of times on passing situations. The pressure of a 5 tech and our fastest kids coming at QB brought alot of hurries.
As you know I'm in Florida and everybody thinks they have to run spead, this defense is easy to adjust.
Thanks again for all you help, David alias Outlaw Josey Wales.
