Coaches
I have a habit of having too many plays. especially in the passing game. I run out of the gun. how many passes are enough out of 1 step, 3 step, Semi-roll, Play action, screens,
my running game consists of about 10 plays not including trick and special plays.
IMO, if your a PASSING TEAM, you can't ever have too many!!! If your going to run a pretty much average high school passing game then a few each out of the 3 and 5 step game, a few play action,
a limited sprintout package. Maybe somewhere between 8-10 all total. Run them out of a mutiple formation platform and you should be fine.

Build in SIMPLE tags to your base routes.
Always good to have 3 and 5 step routes and throw in some roll out....

That's brings me to my next problem. I love the option but I also love to pass. I dont want to over emphasize one aspect and under emphasize the other.
AS you know, I ran the triple option out of the bone for many years. We, being a true option team, threw 10-12 times a game at the very most! But, we practiced our passing game very diligently every day without fail! It takes a special QB to run 25-30 option plays in a row and then be called upon to hit a crucial pass without having established any rhythm of any kind! You know your situation better than anyone, and what has to be done, but my recommendation is if you plan on being successful with the option, then devote a minimum of 90% of your time to that offense!

Been doing a lot of research on this offense... We'll begin to implement it this Spring... Tell me if I'm on the right track.
Looks like the most popular base runs are similar (DE/Read) runs... Zone Read, Tackle Wrap, Tackle Trap...
Then you can counter with the same blocking scheme, but run FB opposite (to pick up unblocked DE) and use QB as the runner....
All the other runs seem to be "icing on the cake".... Speed, Quick Trap, Power, Reverse...
Research Question:
What is your "base" DE Read Run? Wrap, Trap, Zone? and why?
Do you add a pitch man and run triple with your base play?
I am installing the spread new this spring and wonder if I am on the right track. I am installing in this order so far:
One back set gun
Zone/Zone Read/Zone Option
Speed/Crazy (Off the speed and the zone)
I would like to add two back sets and run these as well as Trap/Iso/belly and counter.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Too much....right on track or is it just preference. We are trying to convert from Wing T to spread option.
