Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
As I have mentioned in previous posts, the formula I go back is pretty simple.
One out of every five plays in a game is a special teams play. Therefore you should spend no less than 20% of your ON FIELD practice time on the kicking game.
So if you are on the field for a two and a half hour practice then you should dedicate 30 minutes to special teams. Some head coaches and coordinators will bristle at that suggestion, but those are the same guys who lose games because of a blocked punt or a kickoff return for a TD. You have to coach a complete game and a complete team. Not doing so, is like walking into a fist fight with a lame shoulder.
When we go to camp we have three practices a day. AM in full pads; Afternoon in shells; Evening (shells/then helmets after a few days).
Specials get 30 minutes in both Morning and Afternoon sessions. Kickers, holders, and snappers have a special session of 30 minutes right before our afternoon practice.
Evening session is 30-45 minutes. Returning on air. Installing and walking through things we plan on running tomorrow-different returns, punt blocks or coverage/kick variations.
During the season we spend 30 minutes a day on special teams....sometimes I squeeze an extra 10 minutes!
We punt everyday. We believe it is "The Most Important Play in Football".
We do ALL special teams twice per week on Tuesday/Thursday. We run through them as if it was a game on Thursday.
Knowing that your QB, your Punter and your Place Kicker are the 3 most important players on the team and 2 of the 3 being special forces guys, we devote 25 minutes EVERY PRACTICE TO THEM!!! EACH OF THE FIVE UNITS GET 5 MINUTES A PIECE. I feel that if you want to win, you will give the Punter and the PK
all the individual time you possibly can! On our level, when I hire kickers, they are required to spend the entire 2 hour practice 5 days a week doing nothing but working on their speciality. I also believe that kickers, as well as, anyone else on the roster should be in excellent physical shape and mine are required to do our dynamic stretching routines, running regimens, and weight lifting routines just like any other player. It is no guarantee that they won't get nicked, but if they do, it insures them a much quicker recovery time! YOU JUST CAN'T BE WITHOUT YOUR BEST KICKER, BE IT A PUNTER OR A PK, AND EXPECT TO WIN MUCH!!! Just my opinion as always.

ADDED THOUGHT: Give your LONGSNAPPERS as much time as you can possibly do so each day, to practice their specialty. I have my long snappers for both field goals and punts on the field 15 minutes prior to practice going through their warm up progression that includes 20 long snaps each! REMEMBER, YOU CAN HAVE THE BEST KICKERS IN THE COUNTRY, BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT A REALLY GOOD SNAPPER, YOUR IN FOR A LOT OF GRIEF!!! I DEVOTE AS MUCH TIME TO OUR BIG THREE (SNAPPER, HOLDER, KICKER) AND THEIR DEVELOPMENT AS I DO OUR QB's!!! JUST AS IN BASEBALL, YOU HAVE TO BE STRONG UP THE MIDDLE (CATCHER, PITCHER, 2ND BASEMAN, CENTERFIELDER) IN OUR SPORT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE KICKING GAME ALL STARTS WITH A PERFECT SNAP EVERY TIME!!! THE HOLDER MUST HAVE THE BEST HANDS AVAILABLE, AS HIS SPOT IS AS CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AS THE OTHER TWO. HE MUST BE ATHLETIC AS WELL IN ORDER TO MAKE CHICKEN SOUP OUT OF CHICKEN MANURE WHEN THE SNAP GOES AWRY!

We have the luxury of having a coach who is solely dedicated to Special Teams. He has a system that he has used for years and feels comfortable with. The HC, CO-HC and the ST coach meet on Monday afternoon to discuss what the ST coach has already scouted for the weeks opponent regarding what they do on ST. Each day, we work on a portion of ST. This is when we establish the "HOW TO" for that week. The ST coach and HC go over normal and special scenarios. The period consists of as many repetitions as possible so that the execution sinks in.
The "WANT TO" on our special teams personnel is always present because we use 2nd, & 3rd teamers along w/ our promising young JV kids. These players are given a chance on every special teams play to contribute to the team and also state their case for playing time. The attitude, effort and execution that they show on special teams will tell the coaches allot about their character and commitment to the team.
All of the asst coaches are expected to give some input during ST practice. RB or WR coaches work with the Kick Returners, DB coaches work with the gunners and safeties on KO. The OL coach works w/ OL on Punt and PAT/FG, DL coach works w/ DL on Punt Return and FG block, etc. During the game all asst coaches help to yell out for Special Teams readiness. "Punt Be ready!" on 3rd down. "PAT! PAT!" after every TD, etc.

Nicholas Meyer STAFF SPECIAL TEAMS RESPONSIBILITIES
We break up our Special Teams and each coach (besides our QB/WR coach) is in charge of their own Special Team. OL/DL coaches only have ST responsibilities for FG/FG Block because their guys typically aren’t on the other ones. Each coach is in charge of the scouting report for their own team, and must be able to teach the other coaches their technique. Our TE Coach manages everyone and assists with the game plan and any depth chart moves.
We set aside 25 minutes on M, T, W for Special Teams. Monday’s are our Return Teams, Tuesdays our Coverage Teams, and Wednesdays are FG/FG Block Teams. We then go over all of them on Thursday.
